StreetLevel: Upscale Mexican Hits the South Slope
After being renovated for mucho tiempo, the Mexican restaurant on Fifth Avenue between 12th and 13th streets has finally opened. Piramide, which is in the large space next to Commonwealth, is a fancier than usual south of the border eatery that purports to serve “modern interpretations of traditional Mexican food.” The menu offers entrees like carne asada and salmon seasoned with avocado salsa (both $18). Although the restaurant is up and running, it won’t have an official grand opening until October 19th, which is when its owners expect the city to issue them a booze license. Wares untested, the joint’s already left a bad taste in the mouth of a couple of folks on a Brooklynian thread who say that it has an “uninviting” vibe because its employees are constantly on smoke breaks. Anyone have a report on the chow? GMAP

By far this is the fanciest [looking, at least] place on 5th ave anywhere between about 4th st and maybe 16th st [sidecar is also a new place near 16th, and I think it's pretty good.]
here's wishing 'em well...It's a gutsy location to open at. But if they know what they're doing they should prevail...

I've had dinner there. The guacamole and my meal were quite tasty. Also, had an over-eager waitress. But the decor just screamed Olive Garden.

I had brunch here, and it was delish. I agree that they missed a bit on the decor -- a pity, because they deserve (on the basis of the food) to do well.

different type of mexican but still really delicious.

it will be hard for them to compete with Elora's on 17th and PPW but i do wish them luck.

the inside cant be any worse than the Santa Fe Grill on Lincoln pl and 7th. Its horrible.

that place IS horrible, 5:12.
i can NEVER understand how it's packed every night. the food isn't anything to write home about either.
i guess they get some spillover from la taqueria, lemongrass and others around there...

That's 4 long avenue blocks away. Might as well be on the moon competition-wise.
Anyhoo, the guacamole at Piramide was excellent, but my entree was not so great. I'll try the place again, even though I do think their prices are just a little too high.

We love Maria's at 4th Ave and Union...cut way above the triple-taco-glop-platter, amazing guac, and decent prices. Never tried Elora, from the outside it looks kind of tired; will have to do some Chowhound sleuthing now.

I ate there a couple of days after they started serving food, and it was delicious but extremely expensive.

The food at Piramide is great, although a bit expensive for the neighborhood. I think a more affordable (and more upscale than a taqueria) option is La Cantina at 4th ave and 12th. I also wonder how Tacos Nuevo Mexico will deal with the "competition" just a block away-although comparing the two is like comparing manzanas and naranjas. Speaking of things South Slope and Mexican, what's up with the unwise renovation of Rachel's Taqueria? They killed the California Burrito vibe by removing the Burrito assembly line and replacing it with an inappropriately chic bar. The renovations are like dressing a pig in a tuxedo (and that's not to say that pork doesn't taste excellent). Last, Elora's can't hold a tortilla chip to any of the aforementioned places. It is the least authentic of any Mexican place in the vicinity.

What a fabulous surprise, I didn't expect to enjoy the food so much!!
I had the rib/special, I have to say the best ribs I have ever tasted!!!
Service was superb, courteous, friendly and quick.
Atmosphere was very pleasant and comfortable.
I do not have one negative thing to say about this dining experience.
Loved the whole experience! And I will return.
