StreetLevel: Troubled Smith St. Restaurant Closes

The latest—and extremely short-lived—incarnation of a Carroll Gardens restaurant has closed for good. South American steakhouse Carniceria, which operated out of what Pardon Me For Asking calls “one of the first Smith Street locations to be turned into a restaurant,” recently shuttered. Owner Marco Rivera previously ran Italian eatery Porchetta in the same spot but reopened it as Carniceria this May, after a well-publicized legal spat with chef Jason Neroni. Rivera is now looking to sell his lease, according to a broker involved in the transaction, who also said the current kitchen and dining room setup means the space will almost certainly be taken by another restaurant.

The wife and I loved Banania.

Never went to Porchetta; the chef seemed like an arrogant a-hole.

Sad to see this place go.

We've had a "death watch" on the restaurant Chance since it opened. Never been, but we hate how the facade looks.

This latest reincarnation was bad service and high prices and nothing special food.
Porchetta was very good. Also enjoyed Banania.
And quote from "Pardon Me" reflects her short memory or limited perspective.
Restaurants existed on Smith St. before its current rep. Maybe not ones that catered to 'that' demographic. And not even one of the 1st for 'that' demographic.

And Chance seems to be doing okay. Whereas for some others on the street, I am quite amazed still open.

I still really miss Banania. Great food. Well priced. Friendly and reliable. What a loss to Smith St.

Never understood why Banania closed, it was full every time I went there and imho one of the better places on Smith!

Banania was noisey and I didn't like the long tables. went there once and never again.

Chance has the best lunch specials on smith st!

I ate there 10 times for lunch in the past 3 weeks.....amazing trout and spring roll with peanut sauce...

also the waiter is amazing!!! love it.

Yes, give Chance a try. Their dim sum specials on Sunday are a great alternative to typical brunch. Nice to have a Chinese restaurant on Smith that is so creative with the menu. The people are nice as well.

We have tried Chance twice and both times we were the only people there and felt the food was mediocre.

Is Nino's closed for good, or just renovating again?

I can't imagine them closing for good, when I lived on Henry Street there was always a steady stream of customers and police from the precinct across the street.
