Streetlevel: Northfork Bank for Clinton and Fulton

When we first got word last Spring a North Fork bank was slated for the former dance space at the southwest corner of Clinton and Fulton, we mentioned that there was some uncertainty surrounding bureaucratic approvals at the state level. Well, judging from the signs in the window, it looks like all the permits have come through so residents of this corner of Clinton Hill will finally have an alternative to bodega ATMs.

if the reason is fee-free ATMs then why don't banks put their machines into walls, instead of littering the streets with monstrous branches. As if there aren't enough already.
Or they could get together and stop ripping us off $1.50 for each cross-use of their machines, then they would only need to build 1 branch instead of 3 facing each other.
Everything is done online now anyway, or should be. Branches are an anachronism. Especially the giant ones. Every time I see that commerce bank at the bottom of prospect park south west with a DRIVE THROUGH i puke. Like it was air dropped from dallas suburbs or something.

hey that commerce bank is much better than the gas station thatused to be there
but i agree the drive-thru should go..it really draws too many lazy and reckless drivers...

Ms. "Josephine jcondo resident"--why do you feel the need to state your place of residence? If you need to promote that fugly building, buy an ad.
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 2:50 PM
well, the J Condo does have a brand spankin' new Chase in its ground floor

Or you could take out a couple hundred bucks at the beginning of the week and never go to an atm again.
But Americans are too lazy for that.

all this ATM talk has made me horny
(if u don't get it, dont ask)
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 3:07 PM
And what does it mean if you do 'get it'

Along with opening the branch, North Fork applied to form a banking development district. You can got to the state banking department's website if you're interested in what that is all about, but I mention it because this area was designated by the state as being underserved. For someone to complain about the appearance of a bank -- the first for blocks around as opposed to the three at one intersection that plague some neighborhoods -- in this area is pretty ironic.

I knew a bank was rumored to be in the works, but my heart still sank when I saw the signs confirming it. The bank's presence may be an improvement for some who actually bank at North Fork, but not for others: if this bank intends to rip off cross-users $1.50, then what's the difference between continuing to use the bodega (or continuing to make sure that you withdraw sufficient funds at their own bank to get you through the day/week/month).
No, the reason my heart sank was because I was hoping against hope that something decent would establish a presence: namely, a fresh, fresh, fresh groceries/produce shop! Something similar to Blue Apron or Garden of Eden - a store that sells a quality range of fruit, vegetables, baked goods, cheese, meats, and fish in a space that doesn't smell like someone (or something) died in there three weeks ago. If the place happened to have an ATM (yes, even a fee-charging ATM), then that would kill two birds with one stone: another option for withdrawing cash AND supplying much-needed grocery goodies. But noooo - it's yet another lousy, stinking bank. Dammit!!!

I sure can count how many banks there are in my area of Bushwick
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 3:41 PM
things that should NOT take up valuable street-level retail space:
banks
pet supply stores
real estate offices
laudromats/dry cleaning/tailors
daycare
doctors/dentists/etc
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 3:45 PM
don't be so naive, 3:45.
there is not enough retail to cover every stretch of pedestrian walkways with cheese and wine shops.
there is a plethora of boarded up and vacant properties all over brooklyn.
having a bank in a underserved area is not a sin.
maybe people will go in and set up a savings account.
ever heard of one of those???
will do a body...and an economy GOOD.

banks are relics of a time that is quickly becoming obsolete
landlords will gladly take the high rental income for now, but these things will start disapeearing within 5 years
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 4:02 PM
this so should have been a dunkin donuts
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 4:06 PM
Seems to me folks in this hood should be happy to see a bank, having not had one for, approximately, ever.
What, you want another dollar shop? Fast-food joint? Nail salon?
Also, North Fork branches are better looking than some of the others.

I feel that the children's afternoon dance school was just about the best thing that could have been there. The place was always packed, it benefited the community and was not restrictive in it's pricing (probably why it went out of business - could not afford the rent)
This place will be about as useful as the WaMU 'tax deduction' 2 blocks down.

The bank will do just fine, morons. I'm more interested in the old Bodegas restaurant space across the street. Also, when will the street diggin end? That strip need to be put back together so that it can get back on its feet.

I'm not one, but I bet retailers like an old fashioned brick-and-mortar bank where you can, you know, deposit checks and pick up coin rolls and other useful stuff that probably isn't so convenient over the Internet. And I bet retailers would rather go some place near their shop instead of, say, Chase on Bedford Avenue or Carver on Hanson Place, so the whole trip is as short as it can be. As I said, none of this directly has anything to do with how I live, but sometimes it's fun to think about what other people's needs are.

What are the odds this will be a full service bank? Every other corner "bank" in the surrounding neighborhoods is just a front for 2 bleak ATM machines.
Posted by: guest at October 30, 2007 4:44 PM
There are no banks on Fulton between Flatbush and Bedford. Not one. And you guys are complaining? There a ten other empty storefronts for everyone's dream list. And why shouldn't a dry cleaner be on the first floor? Or a bank? Have any of you seen that stretch of Fulton? Dead, dead, dead. Now my complaint is that it is not a Chase.

Don't usually banks bring some wealth in the surrounding areas ? and the idea of a developing district formation is kind of good since the fulton bid hasn't done anything yet!by the way there will be a meeting about the future of Fulton street methadone clinic on November 16th at 2pm in the office of assembly member Jeffries at 55 hanson place.

Is the Fulton BID actually a reality now?
As for the street repairs, they are ongoing and are not scheduled to be done until early next summer. Hopefully the final phase of sidwalk repair and tree plantings will occur.
I though Bstoner said there was some activity recently in the Bodegas space that supposedly will be developed by the Maggie Browns/Pequena people...

What--all this talk and no mention that Subway sandwiches just reopened across from the old Bodegas shop!
PS: Can't discuss banks right now. Somehow someone got access to my debit card number and PIN without me losing my actual card and robbed my account. SG not a happy girl :(

It seems that the majority of contributors on this site don't understand the meaning of banks or for that matter savings account. OK class now listen, get up from your keyboards and take extra money that you have and save it.
You are truly a lost generation.
THE WHAT

Maybe if more new banks went in instead of new restaurants, that I seem to be unable to go without dropping hundreds at, I'd actually have some of that "extra money" you talk about...

get yo head out yo arse

People on this site are never happy. If banks do not move in to an area, they are maligned as racist and not willing to invest in "the community". But if they do move in, people complain about aesthetics, ATM fees, etc.
Whine, whine, whine.
