Streetlevel: Flatbush Can Eat Cake

dacakepott.JPG
Rumor confirmed: the old Music Emporium on Flatbush near Prospect Place is being turned into a bakery. Per the signage, Da Cake Spott is set open in the space, which we've been seeing workers rehab for a number of weeks. Anyone know who's behind the new biz or when it's gonna open? Competition for Fort Greene's Cake Man Raven? GMAP

ooooh..exciting!!!

can't wait till it opens.

I hope that's not the permanent sign. Come on--spruce it up a bit!

Also, Cake Man Raven is the most overrated "bakery" ever. It's merely built around the personality cult of the owner. Give me a break. The red velvet cake is not even really red velvet; the white frosting is made of powdered sugar and has no hint of the cream cheese flavor that characterizes red velvet. I also don't like buying my $6 slice of cake from a non-refrigerated table stand reminiscent of my grade school cake sale.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:49 PM

I not only hope that isn't the permanent sign, I hope the corporation is working on a 'doing business as'

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:56 PM

you'd have to be a moron to not realize that's a temporary plastic sign.

it's a great thing that they've started advertising with this sign before the place actually opens.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:06 PM

There are actually many businesses in Brooklyn, especially along Flatbush, with PERMANENT shitty "plastic" signs like the one pictured above.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:10 PM

name one.

i walk on flatbush every night and can't think of a single one.

some people will literally complain about anything.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:12 PM

What language is that?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:14 PM

I'm guessing we pronounce it

Da Cake SPOT-tah

Come eat what we GOT-tah

We bakin it HOT-tah

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:16 PM

This neighborhood needs pie, not cake.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:34 PM

So, this dive will be selling da special brownies, I gather.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:38 PM

It really does annoy me when business incorporate bad or mis-correct spelling into their name.
Its gotten and gets old really quickly.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:38 PM

"It really does annoy me when business incorporate bad or mis-correct spelling into their name.
Its gotten and gets old really quickly."

Why should a business be any different than posters to brownstoner?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:03 PM

Worst. Name. Ever.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:14 PM

mis-correct?

I hope you're being ironic.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:15 PM

It's a retarded way to spell the name. Guess it's supposed to broadcast that it's a black-owned business....would have been so much nicer to have it named something witty, like "Slice of Heaven" or something.....

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:16 PM

Need some devil's pie

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:17 PM

Ok, get the "da", though it's just plain annoying, but what does the double-t "spott" mean? Is it slang for something?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:20 PM

Corporate names must be unique when filed. That sometimes leads these strange fabrications.

Very funny, 1:16. I can hear Ini Kamoze doin' the jingle already, "Here come Da Cake SPOT-tah..."

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:30 PM

The name certainly does not connote yummy baked goodness.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:33 PM

hopefully the owner will read this and consider a name change...

something a little less rough sounding perhaps.

it is a bakery afterall.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:59 PM

Time will tell whether the name of this new establishment matters cause if the product is good who cares what they call it. There is a seafood place in Brooklyn called Get it and git....silly name, delicious food, lines out the door.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:09 PM

It's better than Ye Olde Cake Shoppe.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:26 PM

Mo' better than Da G Spott - G?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:32 PM

I sense margarine.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:33 PM

"Guess it's supposed to broadcast that it's a black-owned business."

The mis-spelling of "the" as "da" is hip-hop slang. Black people are really not the only ones who use this. I would say that owner is advertising his/her age and musical preference more that his/her skin color.

I highly doubt a 50 yr old black person would name his/her bakery this way.

"hopefully the owner will read this and consider a name change...

something a little less rough sounding perhaps. "

Because gentle people never misspell.

C'MON PEOPLE- It's the name of a business. It's meant to attract attention, which it obviously did. Can we not make assumptions/criticisms about everything.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:46 PM

Maybe it's a reference/tribute to the former Music Store?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:48 PM

back to the matter at hand... if this is truly a bakery I think its a welcome addition. by bakery I mean cookies, cakes, bread etc. I would love to find a place that had nice baked bread in the 'hood. I totally agree with the first poster about the cake man raven too. first of all the cake is overrated and overpriced. also, the place is small and there's usually a crowd to even get the cake. not to mention the 'bakery' is really a storage room for the small amount of cake they offer compared to the large demand of ppl who want it - they ALWAYS run out of cake. I can't see how they stay in business

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:11 PM

"they ALWAYS run out of cake. I can't see how they stay in business"

Sounds like you kind of answered your own question.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:22 PM

I love how you pretend to be all high and mighty, 4:11..."get back to the matter at hand"

We were speaking of the matter at hand actually. The matter at hand is a sign about a shop in which we know nothing about yet.

And running out of cake is usually a GOOD sign. Obviously you don't know too much about business 101. If there's a large demand for something and they run out, that means they are probably doing ok...

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:24 PM

"they ALWAYS run out of cake. I can't see how they stay in business" I bet a lot of CNR's revenue is from catering, etc.

"Can we not make assumptions/criticisms about everything." Spoil sport.

And just for old(e) times sake: "This place will be worthless once AY gets built."

Yeah, it's a slow Friday.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:29 PM

From the language used it's obvious the same person posted twice saying Cakeman Raven was overrated. What's the agenda? Hmmm?

Because I disagree so completely. Cakeman Raven certainly spends a lot of time promoting himself, but his Red Velvet cake is amazing. I happen to love the powdered sugar in the frosting. Hi, isn't that how it's traditionally made? And the texture of the cake part is never dry, like most Red Velvet cakes are. Several other of my friends from the South love Cakeman Raven's Red Velvet cake. I have tried all the other Red Velvet cake served up in places in Brooklyn and they don't measure up, sorry. There's a reason people line up in the middle of the night for his cakes.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:34 PM

The secret ingredient is love. And smack.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:44 PM

If you think Cakeman's Red Velvet cake isn't good.... Then you clearly have an Ax to grind. Now if you said, " Cakeman's cake is good but his presentation SUCKS" you would have gained credibility. (His presentation does suck)But the red velvet cake is REDICULOUSLY GOOD. I am pissed about it going to $6.00 and it's not a great thing that it's sitting on a table, but who needs it to be stored and refrigerated wen it's sellin' like "Hot Cakes" anyway?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 4:48 PM

I agree 4:48...you can talk about the man,his establishment but you cannot touch his red velvet cake...fresh, moist, tasty and sellin like hot cakes. As for the price, right up there with that ridiculously small slice of Juniors cheesecake for six dollars.I rather Cakeman, at least the slices are huge and add the chopped nuts and ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............sooo good. Now I can get it at Applebees instead of waiting on that line...works for me either way.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 5:25 PM

um. you are likening applebees and cakeman?

yikes.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 5:31 PM

I posted the first Cakeman comment, but not the second one way down the line. There are actually PLENTY of people who do not like that red velvet cake. That's ok, right? We don't all have to like the same thing? I went in there for the first time a few weeks ago and was shocked to see that there was a table against the wall with about 50 packaged slices of red velvet cake stacked up against the wall. No counter, no display, nothing. I also disliked the cake itself, the frosting sucks and has absolutely no hint of the cream cheese it should have, and the dough had a sharp aftertaste that smacked of cheap lard, not butter. So please spare me the indignation...

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 5:47 PM

Ah, so it's lard, according to 5:47 and maybe that's the secret to that cake.

MMmmmmmmm, I love lard.

(I'm not kidding!)

How lucky are we that this is all that we have to worry about! Welcome to the nabe Da Cake Spott. Real life is easier than this blog I'm sure.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 8:04 PM

To Brownstoner, the multiple personality guest is arguing with him/herself. please close "da" post! and get over it Da' Cake Spott is a Brooklyn thang!

Posted by: BIGD_at_BKNY at October 19, 2007 8:25 PM

5:31....am I likening Cakeman to Applebees, no silly. In case you haven't heard, Applebees is now selling Cakeman Raven's red velvet cake.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 9:31 PM

This stretch of flatbush has tons on signs that are this bad. This one looks professionally made, however, and not homemade. I dare them to keep it.

How about lil miss muffin and her stuffin across the street which has a homemade painted picture of lil miss stirring a nasty pot between her legs? They make amazing muffins out of her stuffin over there.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 9:43 PM

Look, we need a Cupcake Cafe (like the one on 9th Ave in manhattan I think) type bakery in the nabe - these guys better bring it if they're going to bake!

I'd take a Clinton Baking Co type breakfast spot in the nabe as well - gotta tell you we rave about what we have, but there's loads we don't yet have!

Come'on cookers, bring it on to the nabes in the county of kings!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 10:42 PM

OMG Clinton Baking Co- the food is soooo good. I have mastered the grits so I don't have to take the trip so often to get my home fix:) Cakemans' cake is not an original red velvet, sorry but, the cake is not colored with all of that food coloring-yuk and the coloring ingedient causes the cake to be moist and look like actual velvet. Anyway, there is enough to go around

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 7:29 AM

It's about how it tastes. And if something makes cake more moist, fine, great. There are way too many too-dry cakes in the hipster bakers. No matter how pretty the storefront or display, the cake (not just the frosting) still needs to be great. Like my peeve, Magnolia Bakery, gross. Those cupcakes are horrible. No flavor, no texture, pure sugar icing (talk about frosting only being made of sugar). But around here on Brownstoner everyone would gush about Magnolia because the presentation is stylish. I'll take stacks of Cakeman's red velvet slices inside his sloppy store any day, over those overrated HBO-promoted cupcakes.

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 11:15 AM

Magnolia sucks my big toe, but so does Cakeman's alleged "red velvet", which it is not.

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 11:37 AM

having a character on a television show eat a cupcake from a bakery does not make for hbo promoted cupcakes.

that's one of the most ignorant comments i've ever heard.

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 9:15 PM

if you want a nice sign for a business then open a friggin business of your own...stop complaining when some BLACK people try to keep some FLAVOR in FLATBUSH...RACIST RACIST RACIST...move back to the upper east side already...

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 10:14 PM

"Magnolia sucks my big toe" That made me laugh. Totally. Used to be good. One time, I walked by there and there were 200 tourists eating cupcakes with electric blue icing.

I'm also with you 10:14. Hope the new bakery does well.

Posted by: guest at October 21, 2007 8:09 AM

Are you kidding me, 9:15? Magnolia is permanenty associated with Sex & The City. You can see this association referenced in blogs and media all the time. If a business is NAMED specifically on a show and more than once, hi, it's receiving promotion from the network. But my real question is, if you are so clueless about pop culture, then why insist on commenting on it?

Posted by: guest at October 21, 2007 10:43 AM

For 9:15 PM, here are merely the first five results out of hundreds when I googled Magnolia Cupcakes & HBO:

http://cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com/2006/03/cupcake-craze.html

To quote the cupcake blog above in 2006:
"the HBO show made Magnolia a must-see tourist stop."

In every single article the NETWORK is mentioned along with the show, as at least somewhat important in making Magnolia popular with people and even with tourists. Which is called....drumroll....promotion!

Posted by: guest at October 21, 2007 10:50 AM

someone has WAY too much time on their hands.

Posted by: guest at October 21, 2007 11:53 AM

Hmm, well, it WAS the weekend, 11:53.

Posted by: guest at October 22, 2007 8:55 AM

Betty Bakery on Atlantic/Nevins (448 Atlantic) has the best red velvet cake I've ever tasted. The secret is their rich butter cream icing. Delicious.

Posted by: guest at October 22, 2007 9:21 AM

Reminds me of the Fire truck in Flatbush with "Da Pride a Flatbush" in big white block letters on the side. I don't think that's a hip-hop reference...

Posted by: guest at October 22, 2007 1:59 PM

So what ever happend to this place? It's not open- no sign of life. Just that awful sign.
