StreetLevel: 5th Avenue Gets Fresh

getfreshfifthavenue.JPG
A new 5th Avenue business appears to be targeting Slopers who want home-cooked meals but don’t have time to do their own hunting and gathering. Signage has gone up on an under-construction space near 5th Street for Get Fresh, a business that’ll offer “delicious, healthy dishes, shopped for, prepped and ready-to-cook in your own home,” according to its website. All the meals are going to use local and organic ingredients, and they’ll run as cheap as $5 a serving. Think you’ll give ’em a whirl? GMAP

Sure I will. Sometimes we're just too tired to cook. So long as it's not mega-overpriced (which I fear it will be), I'll bite.

I rarely cook, so I love having so many restaurants on 5th. But if the "ready-to-cook in your own home" meals cost as much as one that is already cooked and ready to eat, then forget it.

sounds like Busy Chef in BH, which isn't great, IMHO.

depends on the price, i think. if i can go in there an buy 5 nights worth of dinners for my husband and I for $50, then yeah, I'll do it. But I'm guessing it'll run around $100, in which case, I may as well order takeout.

I'm so over takeout - it's never as warm, good, tasty when you get it home.

I'm ready for close to home-cooked so I'll try get fresh for a change of pace.

sounds interesting. like the local, organic part. tough to get take out that is actually good for you. would love to use our kitchen more, so if it's an easy process I can see us using pretty frequently.

why do they need such a large store front for this? ... or any store front at all?

Posted by: guest at October 25, 2007 3:43 PM

I live near Busy Chef in BK Heights and havent been once, the idea doesnt appeal to me. I'd rather cook the same dishes exactly how I like them, for cheaper.

Posted by: guest at October 25, 2007 3:44 PM

Uh, so people can walk in and take out? It's not Fresh Direct - you actually have to leave your house for this. I'm liking the idea.

Would definitely use if the quality is good and the price is right. I used to buy frequently from Dizzy's Kitchen when it had a storefront on Seventh Avenue (in what is now the Mango Thai restaurant in the North Slope). I think there's actually a big demand for this type of place in Park Slope.

Love that the ingredients are organic/local, and I like the idea of seeing the prepped food and cooking it myself, so I know exactly what's in there. As a working mom, making a home-cooked meal that I don't actually have to plan or shop for sounds pretty great. I can definitely see doing this a couple of nights a week--I hate wasting money on take out my kids don't end up eating.

I'm not much of a cook, so I'm very excited about Get Fresh. I'll finally be able to eat well on a regular basis!

i wish something like this would open up right across from ozzies' on 7th ave where that old shoe store is for rent.

i kinda think there is more demand for it up here than it is down on mid 5th, but either way this place sounds great.

i will check it out for sure.

I will use it, because my sub zero and viking stove are not very good.

This place sounds great. I would definitely check it out. The best part is that my place is right across the street :)

I couldn't agree more. Those silly minorities and new money recent arrivals just won't appreciate an upscale establishment like this as much as we would up on 7th Avenue (the REAL Park Slope, mind you). And who wants to be bothered walking two blocks west? Maybe we can send the nannies?

See you at Connecticut Muffin!

10:26....wow....you're a sicko...aren't you?

Posted by: guest at October 26, 2007 12:40 PM

Guest 3:43....you want them to cook these meals where? Oh..you must be offering them the use of your massive kitchen?

If it's anything like Luscious Food on 5th Ave, I'll pass. Overpriced tasteless food. I'm still ticked off about a terrible blob of tuna salad I bought there for $9. They saw me coming a mile away.

nothing like judging a place before they've even opened.

no wonder there's so much turnover in the retail in park slope.

i personally can't wait to try it.

THEN i'll decide if i like it or not.

As a takeout fiend living on 7th Ave., I've run through the Thai-Chi-Pizza-Indian cycle a few too many times. I'd love to be able to make tasty meals with healthy local ingredients in a hurry. I'll be there.

I'm coming from Bay Ridge, but this place sounds worth it. After commuting from union square I'm not in the mood to cook, but I want something healthy and local and tasty. I'll make the trip to park slope to pick up if need be.
