One Hanson's Striptease Under Way
The Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower is, at long last, getting naked. As Gowanus Lounge also noticed, workers have removed the shrouding from the topmost portion of Brooklyn's tallest building over the past couple of days, revealing the skyscraper's gleaming gold cupola. (Good stuff to be sure, but perhaps not as good news as the fact that common charges were recently chopped in half.) We can't wait for the full monty, when the tower's restored clockfaces get an airing. It's been too long, Willie. We're ready for you to take it off, take it all off...Now, if only that penthouse would come on the market?

anyone know what public school this bldg is zoned for?
Posted by: guest at October 1, 2007 10:47 AM
I also love that building.... worked in it for 23 years! It's so beautiful.
Posted by: bren at October 1, 2007 10:47 AM
I saw it in person over teh weeekend at the Atlantic Ave street fair, and it does look nice. Can't wait until the clock is working again.
Any word on the retail bank lobby space? I saw a rumor on this board that Apple was considering the space, but I don't put much stock in an annonymous blog post.
Also, what about move in dates? Last I heard is floors 9-12 were to move in late fall early winter.
As to the common charges I think what Brownstoner meant was the expected abated J-51 taxes are about half the original estimate, but I think the common charges are the same.

"Give me control of a Nation's money and I care not who makes the laws." - Mayer Amschel Bauer (Rothschild)
Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) – Commodities had the biggest monthly gain in 32 years, led by wheat, crude oil and gold, as the dollar’s slump enhanced the appeal of energy, grains and precious metals as a hedge against inflation. The 19-commodity Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index was up 8.1 percent this month, the most since July 1975.
Good week Dumbasses.
Due to the effects of this Housing Boom you are paying more for goods. Inflation is a stealth tax on the middle class, it's robs you of purchasing power. So keep praying, the end is coming soon.
Someday this war's gonna end...

Hey The What - You are back with a new quote...
Love it!
Posted by: newsouthsloper at October 1, 2007 10:52 AM
i really do wish the apple store would open up on the ground floor.
needs to be something along those lines. i thought trader joe's would have been good there, and a little more accessible to more people in brownstone brooklyn but the spot they chose is a good one.

In related news on shrouded phallic objects in Fort Greene, I spoke with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe at Harvest in the Square last week in Union Square Park, and he told me they should be wrapping things up with the Prison Ships Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene Park this November. I'll believe it when I see it--b ut I hope it's true. He also said that the department is "not done yet" with FGP. Sounds good to me.

Apple won't open in the ground floor because its is landmarked. Any retail that goes in there has to maintain the interior which wouldn't really seem to fit at an Apple store.
Posted by: guest at October 1, 2007 11:44 AM
the soho store isn't landmarked?
not sure about that. i feel like it is.
the old bank on atlantic doesn't necessarily fit with what a a typical trader joe's looks like either, but they are making it work.

Bring in the mohel!

The INTERIOR. You can walk into the Soho Apple and tell that the INTERIOR is not landmarked.

As an ardent AY opponent, I propose the demolition of this building. It it out of context with the surrounding neighborhood and is a gross insult to the millions of citizens intent on preserving the low-rise character of Brooklyn.
Posted by: guest at October 1, 2007 12:46 PM
LOL. love it, 12:46.
but what about all the affordable housing it created in the renovation...??
Ha.
Posted by: guest at October 1, 2007 12:54 PM
Speaking of affordable housing, I also propose the demolition of the high-rise housing projects on Carlton and Atlantic. While I understand that thousands of low-income residents would suddenly find themselves homeless, it's a necessary evil on the path towards preserving the low-rise character of Brooklyn.
Sincerely,
12:46

The What,
Posters here are required to use proper grammar. Hence, I shall give you some tips:
1.) Change "No your wife have them in her mouth." to "No,[note the use of a comma] your wife has [not "have"] them in her mouth."
2.) Change "Look punks get a account." to "Look, [another comma] punks, [third comma] get an [no "a"] account."
Much obliged...punk.

Hey What - you neglected to use a colon between "this" and "eat." Punk is right. You need to work on your grammar.

Don't talk about the issues that effect us all. Iraq war, Inflation, High asset prices and Quality of life.
I hope to wake up just one person. There is no more thinking, just bullshit. The houses and condos on this site will take up to 50% of income to maintain them.
People, America is running on fumes. Please just think what's going on.
Be well and have a wonderful evening with your love ones.

They drilled lots of extra windows in the north facade. It doesn't look as good as it used to. I'm surprised the city allowed this.
