At Dumbo Landmarking Hearing, All Signs Point to Yes

dumbostreetscape.jpg
The Historic Districts Council blog reports that yesterday’s LPC hearing to landmark 65 buildings in Dumbo “went astonishingly well.” Jed Walentas spoke in favor of the designation, as did the BID, which requested that the commission allow for a range of ground-floor retail uses. Preservationists, meanwhile, want to ensure that Dumbo’s Belgian block streets are protected and that the LPC helps guide appropriate development in the vacant lots next to the historic district. All in all, the designation appears to be “fast-tracked,” a decision that’s particularly timely given that the rest of the neighborhood may be upzoned soon.

They can use all the belgian blocks that the City ripped up from the big plaza on Newtown Creek at the end of Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. Complete act of vandalism to many of us in the neighborhood.

all the unique character has already been sucked out of dumbo, leaving only a dessicated and boring husk.

If LPC had accomplished this a few years ago, with a slightly larger district, then such awful buildings like the JCondo would never have been built. Too late now, no matter how many Belgian Blocks you truck in.

jcondo plans were approved 9/12/01, most of us were distracted by something else at that time.
