Development Watch: 103 Grand Avenue

103GrandAvenue1007.jpg
The eight-unit, 9,400-square-foot Scarano mezzanine special has limped along for much of this year, impacted, presumably, by scrutiny of the architect's work around the borough. There's no Stop Work Order posted on the DOB at this point, though, so perhaps it'll hit the market soon. This block has really transformed itself in the past 18 month, eh? There are at least six developments planned or underway, including Number 72-76 which will be going in front of the BSA soon.

Whatever happened with the conversion from the earlier post? Loved those windows.

As for Scarano, ugh in most cases, especially when his erections are out of context. This one, however, since the block looks kind of wide open, looks ok to me.

It's just mind-boggling to me that one architect can have his finger in so many pies when I'd bet there are hundreds of others who would kill for just one residential commission.

Is it true that there is a ScaranoBot that just rearranges 10 basic elements to design each "Scarano" building?

It doesn't look bad from the outside, but I'm also not a huge fan of the Scarano Black Brick and the terrace. If he's gonna go with colored brick, why not make it fun?

I this posters humble opinon, the terrace is a BS sales tool: too small to really use, but a nice feature when it comes to selling/renting an apartment. I can hear the person in the walk-though now, "ooooo what a nice terrace."

He's definitely the modern-day Peter Keating.

Ah, the black bricks. The owners of Tri-State Brick/Kings Materials (who source these bad boys) must get a hard-on every time Scarano calls (while the rest of us stay limp, at this point, due to their overuse in most of his projects).

Anyone seen these bricks used on a project from years back, say 5-10 years ago? I'd like to see how they hold up (or not) and if that color ends up looking as "00's" as pink stucco did in the "80's"

balconies are nice no matter what i think. you can check out the weather, get some fresh air, smoke a cigarette. i think a lot people use them.

The yellow cute makes a nice contrast against the dark brick. I hope they keep it.

The owners of Tri-State Brick/Kings Materials=scarano

Posted by: guest at October 13, 2007 11:31 AM

scarano was the architect of record, but he was supplanted by BANJI AWOSIKA ARCHITECT P.C
i don't know why--maybe the owner didn't trust scarano?

Maybe he didn't want to be abused by the blogs!

yeah they really should leave the yellow chute in place or permanently install something equivalent. it looks great up there.

Ah, no. No compliment, just an observation with veiled criticism. Read it again.

Comparison of your black brick bonanza with pink stucco overdose of the 1980's? Compliment?

Well, OK.
