WNYC Contest: The Worst Buildings in New York

Over on WNYC, the Leonard Lopate show has just kicked off a contest to find the worst buildings in New York City. From the horse's mouth:
Is there a building in New York that you thinks is really ugly, or has a fatal design flaw? Think that house or parking garage in your neighborhood is an eyesore? Then take a photo, and send it to us!
The producers have set up a group on Flickr to take submissions; the architectural historian and Times scribe Christopher Gray will appear on the show on September 25 to discuss the submissions and to give his own picks. Sounds like fun to us! We just kicked off the submissions with the bane of our existence220 Greene Avenue (aka the Greene Avenue Atrocity), a project we've chronicled ad nauseum during its miserable less-than-two-year existence.

Hey Mr. Brownstoner, Whatever you reject completely you are attached to forever. Didn't you learn that along the way?

I don't know--there's soooo much to choose from. What an embarassment of riches?
Will the winner be a small, but really ugly POS, like Mr.B's nomination, or one of the many really BIG P(s)OS?

Mr. B, you are too kind. You really need to add closeups of the exposed gas pipes and the broken window at 220...

I"m told by a reliable source next door that this building has serious design flaws, including water leaking in the front due to improper cement/sealant being used along the brickwork/cementwork. How did this get passed by the building inspector? Someone was paid off apparently...

I'm told by a reliable source that this building has major structural problems, including water damage/leakage in front due to improper sealant/brickwork done on the facade. how did this get past the building inspector... obviously paid off. Should this inspector's license be revoked?

Regarding water damage, I remember when the building was being built, Brownstoner had photos showing misaligned brickwork, and other really shoddy building practices. Anyone wanting to make a case just needs to look back in the archives.
As awful as this is, it doesn't hold a candle to the POS at Fulton and Classon. That one is the poster child of Ugly.

Whatever happened to that house with the sheetrock on the outside. Bet that would win hands down if it's still standing.

agree w/ Montrose Morris - that thing at Fulton & Classon has to be the best worst.

There is another building, i think on Bedford near lafayette.. or perhaps on Nostrand that is just as bad, and obviously built by the same developer as the one on bedford and fulton. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it on here.

Yes, you have chronicled this ad nauseum. I say that this exercise is self congratulatory and self indulgent. If there was some goal other than mocking, then I would think it was worth it, but I find this tiresome.

My personal (least) favorite is the thing on Clinton and 3rd I believe in Carrol Gardens. The one that looks like a giant cinder block is eating the corner brownstone.

Looks like Tetris, cinder block bunker edition.

i too thought of the building at fulton and classon. but looking for ugly buildings among new construction is like looking for white folks at the Salvage Meet. i wanna know what the ugliest older-construction building is!

Oops.....hit enter ...as i was saying...Classon Ave and Fulton ST, Bedford ave and Halsey, Greene and Grande

Not only is the Greene ave building ugly (and poor build quality), there is an old bum woman who literally patrols that corner EVERY SINGLE DAY. She is old, insane and would sit on a plastic crate all day (I have seen her in the morning around 9am and she would still be there when I get off work at 6pm). She would curse to anyone who won't help her get something in the convenient store across the street.

I double dog DARE you all to go up to people's houses you think are ugly, and tell them to their faces that their house has been placed on this list.
Man, this is just childish. I should call George Carlin up and add this to his list of things that contribute to the 'pussification' of America.

9:27 must live in a really ugly house. Or under a really ugly bridge.
