StreetLevel: More Manhattan Stylings on Smith Street
East Village gift shop Exit 9 is joining the ranks of Smith Street hawkers with a new store next to Dashing Diva, between Dean and Pacific. The retailer expects to open within the coming month or two. Exit 9 sells a variety of tchotchkes that appear to be tailor-made for the post-Urban Outfitters set, including Mr. T keychains, Alice in Wonderland pop-up books, and beanbag chairs; the store’s mission, according to its website, “is to provide creative and inspirational gifts to a world that is quickly becoming a department store.” Hard to say whether increasingly chain-happy Smith Street was the right choice then, no? I know the owners of this building and they specifically wanted to NOT have a chain store.

I am not even sure what this entry means B-stoner - The only thing I can discern is that you are complaining - which is typical for you - you have become a true curmodgeon.
If you think Smith Street has too many chains then shouldn't you welcome a store that 1.isnt a chain a 2. is committed to carrying unique (i.e. non-chain like) merchandise
OR
Are you trying to say that any store with more then 1 location is a chain?

Well, looks like Gabby was trying to welcome a smaller, eclectic store while poking a little fun at the increasing number of big chains on the street.

Kind of a strange sounding store.
I also question why the owner wouldn't want a chain store? If I were smart enought to buy a building 10 years ago, I would take whoever would pay the rent and didn't annoy me.
If McDonalds is good enough for the Sovietski's in Red Square, its good enough for the Ledger & Co. on beloved Smith Street. (whatever it is, it beats the days when the French joint across the street was a horrible Chinese joint)

Because when McDonalds comes to the neighborhood property values will drop. Lots of other negatives will happen as well but you seem like the type of person who responds to money more than anything else.

I used to live down the block from the East Village Exit 9 and it is actually a handy store to have around. Great for last minute gifts at reasonable prices. And they carry lots of items produced by local artists and small companies.
