StreetLevel: Italian Grub on 3rd Avenue

thirdaverestobuildexterior.JPG
We’ve been watching construction work at the storefront on Third Avenue and Ninth Street for a couple of months, wondering what was coming to this desolate patch of Gowanus turf. Curiosity sated: According to the crew, it’s going to be an Italian restaurant c/o the owners of Park Slope panini/pasta joint Bar Toto. The interior looks to be taking a page from its 11th Street progenitor’s tin-ceilinged/tiled-floor playbook (see photo on the jump). Now it remains to be seen whether the formula that’s worked for Toto on Sixth Avenue can translate to the canal area, which sees far less foot traffic. Guess that hasn’t been a problem for “Brooklyn’s Oldest Italian Restaurant,” Monte's Venetian Room. GMAP

I'm so excited about this. I love Toto and go there at least two or three times a month! I lived on 9th st. and 3rd Avenue for years and always thought that corner building was beautiful. Welcome to the Gowanus guys!

Hurray, that's a great looking building. Best of luck!

Very good news! Now, if only the spot where that old bar, Hennessy's, used to stand would reopen, we might have an "under the el" restaurant row.

Hoo-ray! I live on 3rd Ave just south of 9th Street and am always happy to see anything new pop up. All we have now is the Brooklyn Dance Project and the Lemurplex.

Incidently, I at at Monte's once and it was quite possibly the worst meal I've ever had in my life.

Awesome! I love Bar Toto. I've been there probably 25 times and have never been disappointed. The owner seems like a nice guy and definitely knows what he's doing...He's always around and is a very detail-oriented person so this new location will probably have great ambience as well as excellent food.

Monte's sucks, their place smells like it hasnt been cleaned since they opened, and the cheesecake tastes like rotten fish

I got contracted food poisoning at Monte's, missed work for a month, was fired, my house was foreclosed on, kicked out into the street and my wife left me.

Yeah, screw Monte

hooray! so glad it's coming along! Toto is wonderful! So wonderful that when we lived in the neighborhood we had our wedding party there. and our friends and family are still talking about how much they loved it, and beg us to take them whenever they come into town. Good luck to Peter and Toto!

i've lived on 3rd between 10th and 11th for the past 5 years...not a big fan of toto [the food; not the owners or the location], but here's hoping i can help put that big bar into use for the next few months that i can actually continue to afford to live here!
