Streetlevel: Cafe & Gallery for Pioneering Stretch of Atlantic

Going where other upscale shop owners have feared to tread, the owners of a new space have placed their bets on a stretch of Atlantic Avenue in Clinton Hill that has yet to get the attention of the gentry. And they're not doing it half-way: The interior design of the cafe-gallery-lounge at 936 Atlantic Avenue looks more stylish than anything else to hit the 'hood in recent memory. As noted on the Clinton Hill Blog, the name 'Frank White' refers to a drug lord played by Christopher Walken in the 1990 movie King of New York; a reader comments that Biggie Smalls, who used to live a couple of blocks from the new space, often referred to himself as "the black Frank White." Anyone been yet? GMAP

Good luck to them. Atlantic is gross.

How much does it cost to get shot in the face there?
Posted by: guest at September 10, 2007 8:15 PM
Espresso is $2/shot, in your face or in your cup.

I stopped in last week to check it out and one of the managers, Mohammeda (sp?) gave me a quick tour. Great wallpaper, wide open space, gaudy (in a good way) couches, and a wide deck with seating in the back. It feels like a more stylish version of Outpost. They'll have wi-fi, organic fair trade coffee (natch), and if they go for a liquor license, I could see it as a decent nightlife spot too.

Why do comments tend to be so negative on this site?
Posted by: guest at September 11, 2007 11:35 AM
Don't know. Seems to be more negative lately (past few months).

so i got the scoop on the name from the owners.... frank white's character in the movie 'king of new york was a gangster who wanted to turn good after his release from prison (his big plan was to open a hospital in the hood)....and yes biggie called himself frank white' cuz he considered himself the RAP 'king of new york'!
i went into the space today and tried one of their vege-chicken sandwiches + smoothie. it was tasty. i was happy because its hard to find healthy fast food in this area. they also rent he space for private events!
frank white gets my thumbs up!
