StreetLevel: Cocktail Stirrings on Vanderbilt
Prospect Heights bar hoppers are going to have a new place to belly up to soon. A storefront on Vanderbilt between Dean and Bergen is being rehabbed and will open as cocktail lounge Weatherup & Co., according to one of the guys sprucing up the space. He told us the gin joint is the brainchild of one of the principals at Chinatown’s East Side Company Bar. It’s unclear whether Manhattan speakeasy impresario/master mixologist Sasha Petraske has anything to do with this bar. Either way, it seems to be good cheer for a stretch that already boasts solid boozeries like Soda and Beast. GMAP

oh no -- I'm already sick of drunk yuppies boozily yelling at each other after midnight on my otherwise quiet Prospect Heights street....and now there will be more? Arghh.

Anyone been to Beast? Nice place?
Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 11:42 AM
looks like a gay bar in kansas city. love it.
i think this strip could use one, actually.
or another on 5th ave in ps.
excelsior is tired.

this is addition to the bar/grill on the corner of bergen/vanderbilt? that place looks great, with some sweet ironwork that resembles vines covering the windows. from what i can gather looking thru the window the space has several red leather(ette?) banquettes and a wood bar.
welcome to the neighborhood.

Not to be terribly nitpicky, but east side company is smack dab in the les, right by a couple pickle stores. nary a duck in sight.

After Atlantic Yards is built, this place is GONNA BE WORTH A FORTUNE! Sorry 11:40, but you better get used tod "drunk yuppies boozily yelling at each other after midnight." (How do you know they're yuppies? Do yuppies have some tell-tale way of yelling?)
Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 1:58 PM
Maybe it's not Excelsior that's tired...

Beast is a great bar. Very friendly waitstaff, great winelist, and a spectacular late-night happy hour.
I'm kind of thinking the number of bars might be going up too many too soon, actually. Once AY is done there should be some demand. But Beast just went in a couple of years ago; a new place, Barrett, went in this week at the corner of Bergen and Vandie; and there's talk of the wine bar Half reopening under some new name on Vandie near St. Mark's.

If it actually is a Sasha bar, I wouldn't stress too much about drunk yuppies yelling. ESCo. and Milk & Honey attract one of the more well-behaved bar crowds, and they're smack in the middle of the LES.

Yessss!
I love new neighborhood bars. Our section of the border of Prospect Heights and Clinton Hill have been languishing with out a decent place to drink for too long.
Right now, I'm really into Noona as my neighborhood bar, but maybe the Kansas City gay bar will be my new place--I really like East Side Company Bar, it was there that Matty made me the most incredible whiskey cocktail I've ever had.

The old Half wine bar is due to open under the name "Plan B". I agree that all of these places will do well once AY is built. Those several thousand new residents will need a place to party.

If AY gets built... and that's looking like a mighty big "if" at this juncture.
How about they take all the taxpayer money earmarked for Ratner and build a park on the Yards footprint? Then spend any remainder cleaning and renovating the subway stations.

Wow, 10:06...delusional much?
Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 10:52 PM
When I read the words "at the corner of Bergen and Vandie" I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 11:22 PM
10:52 - I believe the word you meant to type was "visionary". And yes, I am. Thanks for asking, and have a swell day.
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 12:07 AM
Delusional is a more appropriate term, but I respect your right to dream otherwise.
Actually, it's amusing to see your type posting here again. Most anti-AY posts nowadays focus on predictions that the project will fail or ruin the earth. The "it ain't over 'til it's over" blather is mostly a thing of the past.

What is that place on Bergen & Vanderbilt? Kinda campy.
And Excelsior is okay but it would be nice to have a fun gay bar near Fort Queen.
Posted by: gwbrubaker at September 26, 2007 11:14 AM
Oh forgot to mention:
Beast is not bad but more restaurant than bar. I like Soda more, and judging by how crowded it gets another GOOD (friendly) bar would be welcome.
I wish that Sellars was still open...
Posted by: gwbrubaker at September 26, 2007 11:17 AM
it shocks me how many gay men there are in park dope and ft. queen and so few gay establishments.
we could use another.
i've seen a noticeable influx of gay men in the brooklyn brownstone neighborhoods over the last 5 years...especially in the north park slope area.
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:20 AM
Heck-if someone helps me land the financing I'll be more than happy to open and run a fun gay bar! I've got the experience-just need the cash.
Posted by: gwbrubaker at September 26, 2007 11:25 AM
the northern section of 5th avenue would be a great place for a gay bar. i think it would do well.
close to ft. greene...close to all the gays in park slope...
i've seen a number of nice looking stores for rent up there by 5th and berkeley or lincoln...
something fun!
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:37 AM
The thing I would worry about attempting to open a gay establishment on Fifth Avenue is the costs associated with the real estate in that area. Many stores are already fleeing because of the increases, and my concern is that it may be too expensive at this time. If you hear of anything, please let me know!
Thanks!

there is a few block stretch of 5th near berkeley where it seems every day a new store is opening. in the last few months, there's that new oko frozen yogurt place that is ALWAYS packed. there's a new shoe store called Soula that just opened. Matter is up that way, a new Chase Bank, a new place called organic heights is opening on bergen...i saw last night a new jamaican restaurant is opening up. it's definitely a hot area because i think a lot of people want to get in before atlantic yards is built. while i'm sure the rents are outrageous, i think they will only get moreso.
worth checking out. take a walk over there sometime if you get the chance. the rapid pace of change is something.
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:54 AM
I have been and you're right-literally something is new every week. But there is the rub about it-realtors also see this and are raising the stakes accordingly.
I'll be milling around the Atlantic Antic this Sunday-maybe we'll run into each other there (or when I run over to Bierkraft for a tasty belgian afters!).
Posted by: gwbrubaker at September 26, 2007 11:58 AM
yeah...i'll be wandering around this weekend also.
i'll be the tall, stoned guy.
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 12:07 PM
That shouldn't be hard to find on Atlantic! LOL
Posted by: gwbrubaker at September 26, 2007 12:27 PM
gwbrubaker is right. I'm guessing the rents are out of sight on the North end of 5th. The Puppets Jazz bar relocated south of 9th Street, and I expect more of the good stuff to drift southwards while the northern part becomes dominated by chains and other places that can afford the high rents.
Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 1:30 PM
so far the new stuff up in the north looks pretty cool and non-chain-like to me.
hope that lasts. luckily the spaces are very small and for the most part don't appeal to too many chains.
i think the north section has surpassed smith street in terms of a nice shopping and restaurant district in brooklyn.
all of 5th...including the area south of 9th is terrific, but the north has the added benefit of living near a critical mass of people not to mention many many more transportation options.
that's what the south slope area is lacking most.

When Bill Simmons read the words "I threw up in my mouth" he wanted a quarter for royalties.
Posted by: Mateo at September 26, 2007 4:33 PM
IF this place is connected to East Side Company Bar, then Sasha is probably not involved because he's no longer involved in ESCB. If Sasha IS involved in Weatherup, then you are some lucky dogs.
Posted by: guest at September 27, 2007 11:02 AM
pretty sure he's involved.
Posted by: guest at December 28, 2007 9:55 PM
Sasha isn't an owner at ESCo anymore, but is still present there quite frequently (if MnH runs out of mint or bitters)
But anyway, this isn't a Petraske joint.
Probably a Death and Co one, since they will be shut down in 4 months.
Posted by: guest at January 17, 2008 6:19 PM
Here's what it says on Eater:
From the Petraske camp, comes this: "Sasha does not own Weather Up (spelled as two words). But he is consulting for the bar, instructing the bartenders and staff how to mix cocktails properly, what ingredients to use, that sort of thing." Boom, people. Boom. [EaterWire]
