O State Street, Where Art Thou?

cohenstate1.JPG
Seems Brooklyn Heights wasn’t picture perfect enough for the Coen Brothers. The duo is shooting "Burn After Reading" on State Street between Clinton and Court over the next few weeks, and a production crew has painted the facades of a couple buildings red, blue and yellow, and is adding ornamental details to a couple others. A worker said the buildings are being transformed in order to approximate the look of a Georgetown street for the flick, which stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt and John Malkovich. The worker also told us the buildings are going to be washed off after filming wraps since "this is a historic district and all."

It's Coen, Mr. B.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 9:52 AM

Did you mean "Coen" brothers?

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 9:52 AM

George and Brad...are filming...in Brooklyn??? WHHHHHHEEEEEEEEENG!
[sound of hormonal lady at supersonic speed heading for downtown Brooklyn]

Brenda from Flatbush [who is certain they'll need some extras on that shoot, right? right?]

WTF? They're painting BRICK buildings in a historic district and then they're going to "wash" it off? What property owner would let someone do that? Unless it's magic Hollywood temporary paint or something....

Posted by: Rehab at September 19, 2007 10:15 AM

they can paint me red blue or yellow for all I care knowing mr clooney will be nearer to my heart!!!

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 10:25 AM

I will wash those buildings myself it it means I can get a close up look at my imaginary boyfriend George.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 10:28 AM

If they want it to look like Georgetown, why not film it there? Or is that too obvious a question?

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 10:44 AM

Everything in Hollywood is temporary.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 10:55 AM

Why the heck don't they film in Georgetown?
I suppose that unlike Brooklyn, there are nice people who cannot be disturbed in DC. Geesh.

Posted by: sam at September 19, 2007 11:40 AM

Historical schmistorical. Why not keep them color? I think it livens up the place a bit.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 12:46 PM

There have been many movies filmed in Georgetown, most recent one I can think of is "Wedding Crashers" so I'm guessing they're in the nabe for another reason.
But why the paint? Not all DC townhouses are candy-colored! In fact, many are just plain ole' brick.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 12:55 PM

Some house in Georgetown are painted, others are not. But they look very different from Brooklyn Heights houses. Also you will not find any tumbledown or badly remodeled houses in Georgetown, the Heights is full of them.
To me, one of the real characteristics of Georgetown are brick sidewalks. Are they putting down brick contact paper on the typically broken and heaved sidewalks of Brooklyn Heights?

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 1:49 PM

All three are probably here for other reasons, too. I can't wait for the Gawker Stalker reports...

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 2:20 PM

From WIKI: Although the CIA agent's house is set in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., the filming location for the scene will be in Brooklyn Heights, as the Coen Brothers wanted to stay in the New York City to be with their family.

Posted by: Carol Gardens at September 19, 2007 2:39 PM

why can't they just use CG?

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 2:41 PM

They're PAINTING brick houses in an Historic District! IMO the LPC should crack down on the production company AND the homeowners. Furthermore, they should NEVER again receive a permit to shoot anywhere in NYC.

They are also filming on Hicks Street between Pierrepont and Clark, in a wood-frame house. They have been prepping the house for about two weeks and apparently they will be there for about another two weeks.

1:49 -- on the other hand, in Georgetown, you get to live in Washington. In Brooklyn Heights, you get to live in New York City. Case closed.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 4:30 PM

Just walked along Hicks, hoping for a glimpse of dreamy Mr. Clooney. No such luck. However, if you are parked on Hicks, better move your car or get towed.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 5:34 PM

Historical schmistorical. Paint them and keep them painted. Looks nice.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 5:39 PM

Brooklyn Heights could use a little paint and a little rejuvenation, n'est-ce pas?
What an old-farty neighborhood.

Posted by: guest at September 19, 2007 11:10 PM

Clooney is a asshat!

Posted by: guest at September 20, 2007 7:05 AM

3:53 sounds like they sat on a gigantic stick.

Posted by: guest at September 20, 2007 8:15 AM

The building wasn't painted just for this movie. The brick had been painted red long ago. This can be seen in the photo of the building, on the very left. This part of the building was untouched by the movie crew. After the filming, the entire side of the building will be repainted red. All of this was approved by the Landmarks Commission prior to painting.

Posted by: guest at September 20, 2007 2:25 PM

Yeah, so why doesn't everyone just butt out!

Posted by: guest at September 20, 2007 3:29 PM

i live on the block and it's a major disruption. construction starts at 7am every day, the sidewalks are blocked and the workers don't even pretend to care.

they offered my co-op $1000 to use the roof for lighting and rainmaker showerheads. they're doing an all-night shoot outside on oct 4. we said no. really an insulting location fee for an $80 million picture.

love the coen bros, just wish they would shoot on someone else's block.

Posted by: guest at September 21, 2007 1:29 PM

clooney is a fruitcake, like THe What

Posted by: guest at September 22, 2007 12:09 AM

anyone know shooting schedule and/or if there will be multiple all night shoots? live on block and am wondering whether to buy a sensory deprivation tank.

Posted by: guest at September 24, 2007 3:07 PM

Have you people never heard of watercolors? Do you think this is the first time this has been done on a set? Who on earth would let someone paint their building with latex or oil-based paints. I guarantee you that they used watercolors, which, by definition, wash off with WATER! Relax whistleblowers.

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:22 AM

I would go further.

What the Coen Brothers are doing is more than an insult to our neighborhood. It is the shame of the nation. And unless we speak out, NO AMERICAN will be safe from George Clooney's roguish good looks--which displace families, uproot communities, and destroy entire shrubberies.

What's really funny, though, is the fake door. The local mosque left some literature for the occupant (a brick wall, normally painted a uniform red). "A couple buildings" is actually just one.

Posted by: guest at September 30, 2007 12:36 AM

Can anyone tell me what the filming schedule/streets are for Thurs night, Oct 4th? I am supposed to be driving into that area and am worried about what I'm going to be running into. Thanks

Posted by: guest at October 1, 2007 10:43 AM

Yes, paint that washes off people so relax. This was shot in Europe somewhere and they actually cleaned every spec of non-permenant paint off which is night and day compared to 3 buildings.

These same people that are knocking it will be bragging it to their out of state friends that Clooney and Pitt were filming here.

Oh, here is the link to the info of the clean up effort for the paint commercial I linked above.

IT WAS NOT A WASH-OFF PAINT!!!!!!! The three colors that were painted for the movie were painted in a normal, exterior house paint; not some Hollywood washable paint.

The building has now been re-painted with high quality Benjamin Moore exterior latex paint. I know - - I live there. Now will all of you who DON'T know what you are talking about please stop writing in about this.

The movie people were wonderful to deal with and repainted the entire side of the building. They left both sides of State Street better than they found it.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 10:59 AM

They are now filming on the upper east side, 89th Street. I find it amazingly exciting that they are filming right outside my building! They can paint whatever they want :)
