Navy Yard Watch: New Tow Pound Building Rising

As the New York Times discussed a couple of weeks ago, big things are happening at the Navy Yard. Some of the action is already underway on the Navy Street side of the complex. As anyone who's had a car towed recently knows, the NYPD Tow Pound is hardly a vision of modernity. In fact, for years its headquarters has been a glorified mobile home. To address this issue, the City is building a new HQ for the tow police, which is the building you see rising. The construction is part of a larger initiative that will switch the two entrances on Navy Street. The current Navy Yard entrance will become the tow pound entrance and the old Sands Street gate, which until now has been the tow pound entrance, will be restored and become the entrance; requests for proposals for the rehab went out last week. The brick wall along Navy Street is the top portion of a retaining wall that is collapsing; it is now in the process of being replaced. Too bad—it was a charmer.
