Park Slope's Twisted Firestarter Strikes Twice

6thstreetfire1.JPG
A vandal has started fires on 6th Street between 5th and 4th avenues twice in the past week. Both incidents occurred on the street's garbage nights, according to people who live on the block. Last Wednesday, someone ignited garbage bags and completely wrecked the Subaru shown above. The building next to the car was filled with nasty smoke for most of Thursday, according to a resident. And last night a similar fire was started, though it doesn't seem to have resulted in property damage (see singed sidewalk on jump). "That's two garbage nights in a row," said someone who lives on the block. "Clearly it's becoming a problem." Clearly. GMAP

Why would someone live in ps? Might as well sign up for a tour of Iraq.

I walked by a smoking garbage can this morning on Sterling Place near Flatbush. There was a lit cigarette smoldering in a piece of paper -- I took it out and put out the cigarette, so no harm done, but how strange...

10:04's comment makes me wonder if smoldering cigarette butts starting fires has anyhing to do with the Dept. of Sanitation's idiotic new policy of removing corner litter baskets because people "abuse" them.

Not sure if this is related or the same person, but earlier this year in the winter (i think) a car was set fire to on dean between fourth and fifth. It was across the street from my apartment (i woke up to the firemen smashing out the windows - 3am on a saturday night, i think) and the pattern of fire/hear damage on the car matched the subaru above.

What if there were a little dog inside these cars? The arsonist might be able to see if there's a person or baby inside the car, but a small dog wouldn't be visible. Park Slope is dog country. Lots of dogowners there.

Great point 1:17, and also, what if there were a chinchilla in one of the cars? Chinchillas are rabbit-sized, crepuscular rodents native to the Andes mountains in South America, but someone in Park Slope may own and love one and may have been keeping it in it the car. It's quite possible the arsonist might not have seen the chinchilla, as they are quite small.

Wow. Thank God I didn't park there last night!

Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 3:08 PM

What if there were a Chia Pet in the back seat? They would never see that either.

Nor a Pet Rock.

Move on up a couple of avenues...I have a couple jackasses with loud car stereos and useless car alarms that could use some torching...I won't say a word.

Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 3:59 PM

What if Eve unsler's VAGINA had been in the car?!?!

Posted by: guest at September 25, 2007 4:54 PM

What if Im-a-Dinner-Jacket had been in the car?

Ahhhhhh....

I live on 6th b/w 4th and 5th our apartment has a roof deck we go up to occasionally. We happened to be up there on Friday night and saw a car on fire across 4th ave (6th b/w 4th and 3rd).

Called 911, watched it burn, and the FD show up to put it out and then bang on it with sledge hammers for a while. It was an exciting event for a group of drunks.

Is this car fire more important than the fire that took three lives in Victorian Flatbush? Why no mention of this?

Posted by: B Square at September 25, 2007 9:16 PM

This can't be happening...in the gated community of Park Slope.

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 3:56 AM

Bob Marvin has a point--more smokers are indulging outdoors than ever before, yet one can walk blocks without encountering a trashcan. If I were skeptical I would say it has nothing to do with abuse--fewer cans = fewer cans which require emptying by DOS.

There were two other fires on the corner of 5th avenue and 4th street in July and August. A small van was destroyed in the August case.

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:34 AM

Gosh! Was the fatal fire in Victorian Flatbush caused by an arsonist putting crap under a car and lighting it on fire too?

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:36 AM

The same thing happened on Vanderbilt Avenue between Greene Ave & Fulton St a couple of weeks ago. My friend's bumper was melted and had to be replaced.

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 11:54 AM

I'm pretty sure that the reason the tragedy in Victorian Flatbush was not discussed here is because this post is about something else. It's not a personal affront to the people who died in the fire. Why not ask the folks who run this site to post something in more detail or include links in your comments to the numerous articles that are posted on line like this one: http://www.brooklyneagle.com/categories/category.php?category_id=27&id=15631.

I was there when the car blew up on 5th avenue...(at 4am) and while there is absolutely no comparison to the loss life in the house fire it was still scary and still something of concern for the neighborhood and the family who's car was destroyed.

Posted by: guest at September 26, 2007 4:03 PM

11:36, what an ignorant response. I agree with B Squared, property damage can never compare to three lives being lost. I wasn't aware of the fire in Flatbush. Car fires are definitely dangerous but house fires and the conditions that cause them are a much greater threat to human life which can not be replaced. You can always but another Volvo, Beamer or Saab!
