Development Watch: 440 Van Brunt Sprouting
The seeds of a new building on Van Brunt Street were hardly planted before the DOB hit the project with a stop work order. But construction's once again resumed at this site a block from Fairway, which is slated to be a greenhouse and three-story building for the Chelsea Garden Center, which started doing business in Red Hook this past spring. This can't be good news for nearby Liberty Sunset and the already endangered Gowanus Nursery, can it? GMAP

Not sure why it would be bad for the other gardening businesses. Similar businesses often cluster together -- witness all the kitchen equipment stores on the Bowery. If Red Hook becomes a shopping destination for gardeners by virtue of several such businesses, that's good for everybody.

I see excavation but do they plan a cellar? I read FEMA has recently mapped all of Red Hook for storm surge.
