Streetlevel: Union Market Expanding, But Staying In 'Hood

Either our source on this story was having a bad day or Union Market's expansion plans are even more ambitious than we thought. While the tip we got back in June about an impending Fort Greene location for the Park Slope gourmet grocer remains nothing more than speculation, there's confirmation of expansion plans within the neighborhood. The sign above appeared recently at 402 Seventh Avenue between 12th and 13th Street indicating that the second branch will be opening this Fall. How psyched are South Slopers! Update: Evidently this isn't quite as newsworthy as we thought. Both the Brooklyn Paper and the blog Five of Toast have already hit this. GMAP

This goes to show that Park Slope is still where it's at.
Very good news!

Union Market is a godsend -- saving us from the tyranny of the Park Slope Food Co-op.

Yes, saving you from the tyranny of the PSFC and charging you twice as much! Viva la Revolution!

there are both good and bad aspects of UM opening in the south slope, either way it definitely reveals a lot about the new demographics of the neighborhood.
also, i read about the opening of a so-slo UM last month...

Sad that Union Mkt is not opening in Ft Greene, as it would be a welcome addition to the 'nabe.
Speaking of which, a Realtor told me the other day that the large space on Fulton, sandwiched between Newspaper store on Fulton and So Elliot and the medical clinic is slated to be an organic/gourmet grocery. Worth following up on...

$12 for a rotisserie chicken, I'll pass.
I'm sure Billy will be standing out front being annoying as usual.

I'd trade it all to have Liberty Meat Market back again...

Sure, you pay more than the coop, but you get to keep your dignity.
Walking people to their home/car in an orange vest? Not a friggin chance.
Douchebags.

What are folks' experiences shopping at the coop?
My husband and I have resisted joining (we like the liberty of shopping at a variety of places and can't take on any more work responsibilities than we already have), much to the confusion of some of our friends and acquaintances, who communicate incredible loyalty to the place.

Meh. I went in there yesterday to see what all the hype was about. It's tiny aisles were packed with all the proper little Bugaboos scrambling to get their share of the overpriced "gourmet."
