Killer Apps at Po
276 Smith St (at Sackett), Carroll Gardens, (718) 875-1980
"Appetizers were unbelievably good, and set a ridiculously high bar that the rest of meal couldn't possibly follow. The highlight was marinated anchovies piled on a suprisingly light mound of barley, the whole thing drizzled with lemon and chili oil--it's my new favorite dish." [A Brooklyn Life]

After the jump: Keeping cool at Sample, getting the grill going at Gowanus Yacht Club, and taking orders at La Maison du Couscous...

Cooling Off at Sample
152 Smith St, Cobble Hill
"Enough with sitting outside in the twilight and drinking with my friends — shit is hot outside. I recently cooled down at Sample, a quiet bar with brick walls, decorative arrangements of wintry twigs, and really effective air conditioning." [The L Magazine]

The Grill is Running Again at Gowanus
323 Smith St (at President Street), Carroll Gardens, (718) 246-1321
"Gowanus Yacht Club's GrillGate has ended and the establishment is once again serving up grilled hotdogs and hamburgers. A tipster fills us in on the bucolic scene: 'im happy to report that the grill at gyc is up and running, and both sat and sunday the deck was filled with smiling sweaty people, finding comfort under the spraying sprinkler and enjoying grilled dogs, burgers, and keilbasa. (sp?)' " [Eater]

A Passionate Server at La Maison du Couscous
77th Street in Bay Ridge, just west of 5th Avenue; (718) 921-2400
"When we tried to order the Chicken Kdra, a stew of chicken, chickpeas, smen, lemon, parsley, and saffron along with a side order of plain couscous, he insisted that we try the Couscous Maison instead. We tried to explain that we craved chickpeas and smen and hated pineapple, and were reassured that we would get everything we wanted." [Gothamist]

I am sure most Brownstoner readers think it is just wonderful - but to me arrogant and unneighborly for this wine bar to put seating out front on this residential street so people can get tanked and everyone has to hear the giggle and chatter of the smart set.
Different if on commercial street - but Union and Hoyt is not.

my goodness that is a precious attitude you have there, 2:01. if you require your residential block to be unsullied by the peaceful noise of other city dwellers, you would probably prefer living where there are no other city dwellers. try staten island or new paltz or something.

2:01's comment is ridiculous.

Went to the wine bar on Saturday night- it's ok- glasses in the 7-12 range, a few paninis, cheeses, and desserts on offer. Brought to us by Alan Harding of Schnack, Pacifico/Trout/Gravy "fame"- who else?

hurray! the food feature is here to stay!

The new wine bar used to be a pharmacy when I was growing up in CG. Just a little jot of history...

first, union and hoyt isn't exactly idyllic - i used to live on hoyt street and it's not exactly peaceful. this place is only three short blocks from the gowanus houses. i personally consider the benefits of a spot like this to far outweigh any inconveniences. people and eyes on the street is a good thing. if noise is your primary concern, i'm sure you could be proactive and speak with the owner so that they can monitor the noise level. unless you'd rather be "arrogant and unneighborly" about it, that is.

I agree with 2:01. This does not seem like an obvious or particularly friendly spot to place a wine bar. I'm sure Alan Harding is pissing off quite a few of his neighbors.

The wine bar is brought to you by Bagels by the Park and Smith Union formerly Sonny's.

I live around the corner and haven't gone in yet, but it doesn't exactly SOUND raucous. Nothing to compare with the Yacht Club, anyway.

You've also got hulking PS 32 across the street and stereo-blasting rigs rolling down Hoyt from the projects every-so-often through the night, so I'd be surprised if they're causing much annoyance.

The giggle and chatter of the dumb set is so much cooler- especially in written form.

That wine bar is not going to make it. So there. Not good location and serves him right for opening on that corner.
