Slow Train Coming: Humboldt 'Affordable Housing'

37herbertst.jpg
What the heck's taking so long with the conversion of the old police building at the corner of Herbert and Humboldt in Greenpoint? Back in March 2006, it was announce that the building, which is owned by HPD, would be turned into 14 subsidized condo units with a $1 million in financing from the North Brooklyn Development Corporation and another $300,000 kicked in by the city. In the 16 months since, not a single announcement or filing with the Department of Buildings. We know that the wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly, but this is something else! Anyone know what the hold-up is?

I heard there's still a detective keeping an office in the basement.

That's just the ghost of Frank Serpico.

They've been filming movies in there (and Rescue Me, too, I think). Something with John Leguizamo.

They are going through ULURP now - CB1 signed off on the project in May or June, so it is probably at the Boro Prez now, and then on to CPC and the Council. Based on that, I would expect them to be ready to file at DOB sometime in the fall. No idea why it took them so long to get into the ULURP process, other than that it usually takes a while.

That corner is loud as all get out. It looks out over the BQE, the Humbolt ave exit from the BQE and it intersects Meeker Ave. and McGuiness Blvd.

No wonder they are making it affordable housing, no one else would live there!
