Brownstoner in Berlin: Part 3

In the space of about five blocks from our hotel in Mitte, we came across these four developments. (And there were others.) Part of what's driving the development in Berlin, as we understand of it, is the lack of apartments that can be bought since so many have the equivalent of rent-controlled tenants. Building new apartments is the surest way to create liquid housing stock.

With the Grafitti posts and Squatter references, it was beginning to look like Berlin was beginning to rub off on old Brownstoner. Good to see he is back to his rent control bashing ways.

It is astounding how much construction there is in Berlin with such low rents. Granted I was last there 7 years ago.

Terrific, a real busman's holiday.
Graffiti, rent-control tenants, cranes and new construction everywhere. All that Berlin is missing is the Brooklyn Bridge.

Funny, I didn't notice much construction in Berlin last summer. Granted, there was lots of development in the mid-90's, but not as much in recent years.

You are staying in Mitte, which is the hottest area, so it's not surprising there is some growth, but there's little new development in less gentrified or outlying districts.

Great posting...and glad to see Brownstoner visiting my "home" country. You will see a lot of construction in and around Berlin. Berlin is the last European capital were you can truely find extremely cheap real estate. The reason therefore is Berlin's history.
