Boerum Hill's Mad Crapper Caught in the Act

BHcrapper.jpgThe residents of Boerum Hill have been contending with an unpleasant quality of life problem recently—someone's been crapping on the sidewalks and in people's front yards with increasing regularity. Last Tuesday, The Daily News devoted an entire article to the issue, with Sue Wolfe, president of the Boerum Hill Association, confirming, "It's a big problem - it's gotten worse over the years and much worse recently." Certain clues, most notably the location of the evidence and the presence of tissue paper, had convinced residents that the perpetrator had two legs instead of four but no one had caught the person in the act. Until yesterday. Here it is from the horse's mouth:

For the second time in two weeks I got pooped on. This time I saw her. I live on Dean Street between Hoyt and Bond. At 6 a.m. this morning my wife heard...well peeing...she woke me up and I went to the door. We live in the garden apartment so I looked up...and saw butt - thus I yelled..."HEY MOVE YOUR ASS!!!!" This was the first time in my life that I literally meant it.
After the pooping I threw on some clothes and set out to find the poopertrator. I did not find her. But my wife did hear the woman outside while I scrambled for my clothes, she did not run, just kept talking to herself. It turns out that the infamous stoop pooper is a clearly rather mentally ill black woman with very short dreds.

It actually sounds a lot like the woman who we found giving herself a makeshift bath in the doorway of our ground floor during our renovations a couple of years ago. Does this description match with any other sightings?

poor slob, she's obviously out of her mind.

We had poop in our building's vestibule last year but I assumed it was from the woman who talks to herself in French and used to sit outside of the Starbucks at Court & Dean. Haven't seen her in quite awhile....

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 9:52 AM

very very sad. i hope she gets the mental health care she needs, oh wait, even people w/ health insurance don't always get proper mental care.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 11:01 AM

Is this the same woman who used to hunker down in the passageway near the Bond Street entrance to the A/G at Hoyt/Schermerhorn?

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 11:10 AM

From the vague description it sounds like a mentally ill woman often seen sitting in the MetroTech Commons talking to herself. I took notice when she was sitting on a bench talking to herself wearing just a t-shirt and panties.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 11:28 AM

This description sounds like the lady I saw last week sitting on our neighbors stoop (near Pacific & Bond). She was rummaging through a paper bag, and initially I thought she was probably a junkie getting ready to shoot up, but maybe it was TP in that bag? Ewww. Didn't notice any poop the next day.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 11:36 AM

Actually the city is to blame for this...
They let some of the mentally people go after a few years to cut back costs..so they become homeless and run the streets.
Sad but if you people live in Boerum Hill
are there cops regulating the problem??

My neighbors caught a woman preparing to leave me a present by my door a few months ago. Luckily they got rid of her before she could drop it off. I wonder if it is the same woman. If so, she really gets around. I live in the Stuy.

I've lived in Boerum Hill for all of two months now, so excuse me if I'm taking a newbie perspective; It seems to me that if you have shady, tree-lined streets that directly abut a rather urban area (Downtown Brooklyn) it’s only natural for people to detour through the shady parts and sometimes stop and chill for a bit. I often see people relaxing on my neighbours' stoops that obviously don't live there, and aside from the occasional bit of trash or soda bottle left over, it seemed like a perfectly legitimate symbiotic relationship. The crapping, however, is a bit over the line. I’ve lived in urban neighbourhoods before and dealt with urban excrement. Most recently, I stumbled upon it (nearly through it) on the sidewalk near State and Bond and just assumed it was par for the course. Interesting to see we’ve narrowed it down to one prime suspect.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 12:28 PM

i've seen her in action! i live on Dean and Hoyt, across from Heath and Michelle, and I've seen her going #2 on the side of their house, the side w/ the garages.

Posted by: do at July 2, 2007 12:43 PM

While this may seem as amusing as sighting a rare emu in the wild, this is a prime example of people slipping through the cracks of our so-called mental health system. This is about as degraded as human life can be in a 21st century modern city. I'm serious in asking what can be done to help her, not just remove her from the vicinity of multi-million dollar homes?

Posted by: Sterling Silver at July 2, 2007 12:51 PM

What strikes me is that in present-day NYC we can narrow it down to ONE homeless person. When I first moved here the housed and the homeless seemed to be about 1:1; trying to pick out ONE homless person was like standing in Times Square and trying to pick out one particular taxi.

I hope this women is found and taken somewhere where she might get some care, bot for her sake and the sake of the, um..crapees.

Posted by: houseowax at July 2, 2007 1:23 PM

I'm with Sterling Silver. It's not like this poor woman is seeking out only really nice renovated bstones on which to poop. Callous m*f*ckers you are, calling her a 'poor slob'....that is shameful.

Clearly there are homeless people in Brooklyn. That is the problem, not people pooping on your stoops.

Posted by: Holy** at July 2, 2007 1:27 PM

I have spotted human excrement twice in Brooklyn. Once on the steps of Clinton-Washington Station (C train, near Washington) and once in the scaffolding covered sidewalk in front of the Boerum Heights condo units.

Posted by: poop chute at July 2, 2007 1:27 PM

I lived on 5th Ave and Bergen St. until recently. I have seen this woman in action before. She is known in the neighborhood as "most fashionable" due to her raiding the Park Slope area clothing drops during the night.I caught her doing her business one morning between parked cars on Bergen St. as I was headed to the subway. I thought I had seen everything. Only in New York.

Posted by: blackoyster at July 2, 2007 1:32 PM

I believe I'd rather find poop than the used condom which cropped up in our garden-level entrance alcove.

Posted by: anon at July 2, 2007 1:35 PM

I saw a woman outside my clinton hill brownstonelooking all around in a shifty manner while standing behind a parked car. I thought she might be thinking of trying to break in and was keeping an eye on her because of that, and because some neighbors kids were playing on the sidewalk across the street and she looked suspicious. It was broad daylight in the morning. She looked normal enough, white shirt dark shorts, black woman, don't know if she had dreads like the lady described in the post, but this particular woman didn't give the impression of being homeless.

Next thing I know she starts to drop trou to do her business on the sidewalk by the wheel of the car. I yell out "yo, yo, yo!" and she quickly pulls her pants back up, not sure where I'm calling from, and yells "F*ck" and "G*dd*mmit" a few times and loudly remonstrates "I gotta f***** go m*****f*****, sh**" and continues to yell and then mumble embarassed obscenties as she walked downed the residential block. Lovely. Could've gone to a local store a couple of blocks away...

To holy sh**:
obviously, it's terribly sad that homeless and mentally ill people exist, both in brooklyn and in the world. no one has implied otherwise.
but get off your high horse -- if someone is dropping a deuce outside apartment, it's perfectly natural to get upset. why must it be heartless and cruel to say so?
in terms of helping her... unfortunately, no one can compel her to give up her freedom if she doesn't give consent or get caught committing a crime. but she clearly needs medicine and/or inpatient care at a mental hospital. so making others aware in this manner might be the first step to help her.

Posted by: NoNumber2 at July 2, 2007 2:05 PM

If you want to help her you have to call Adult Protective Services, dial 311.

Posted by: none at July 2, 2007 2:17 PM

Poop Chute,

If you go to the Clinton/Washington Ave side today (Clinton side), you'll notice excrement in the amount of horseshit with discarded shorts.

Excrement seems to be par for the course every 3 mos at that station.

Posted by: supergirl at July 2, 2007 2:17 PM

In the '70s there was a passionate movement to protect the civil rights of mentally ill people and with the advent of effective psychoactive drugs, institutionalization was viewed as a kind of imprisonment. Community care and the use of medication was the preferred public policy and the massive NYS mental hospital system was downsized. The move toward community care for massive numbers of the mentally ill without the necessary community facilities, follow up, etc. has left people like this lady roaming around in this state. This was one of the worst public policy failures and a great contributor to homelessness that we have ever seen. That being said, I like the term "poopetrator".

Posted by: donatella at July 2, 2007 2:27 PM

Weren't there alot of homeless put on the stret after the Reagan budget cts in the early 80s?

I agree w/ the poster who spoke of the degradation--very sad.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 3:06 PM

Sorry if I freaked you out, guys, but I had just come from Bonita--you know how it is.

Posted by: Burrito in molé at July 2, 2007 3:06 PM

Craptastic - Many, most Brooklyn stores won't allow homeless people (or, those who LOOK homeless) to use their restrooms.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 3:10 PM

Holy**, how extremely insensitive it is of you to refer to those who called the crapper a poor slob as "Callous m*f*ckers"

Posted by: greenwood slope at July 2, 2007 3:33 PM

Saw a woman of this description poop in Ft. Greene behind BAM last year. I was sitting on the steps of my building and she dropped her pants right in front of me and pooped between two cars. I was frozen in disbelief.

A little girl walked by and screamed as she was finishing and the pooper ran off without wiping. Only in NYC. Hope she is ok and gets help. The imaqe is burned in my brain.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 2, 2007 3:41 PM

There are a couple of crackwhores who are subletting a place on Dean Street right between Hoyt and Bond street. One I saw (never touched) was 22 but looked "broke" and she lives with a Scottish guy. She lists herself on Craigslist Erotic Services as Cate or Katie or Catie or Kate from Boerum Hill. Claims to be from New Jersey and worked at some place across from Trump Casino. Neighborhood folks had better find out where exactly they are and kick their whitetrash ass out.

Posted by: StonerBrown at July 2, 2007 3:56 PM

It's true that deinstitutionalization was terribly implemented (for the most part it was good to get people out of hospitals, but bad not to provide extensive community support).

However, the situation is much improved today. Not that there isn't further to go, but a series of city-state agreements to create supportive housing for people with serious and persistent mental illness has helped get a lot of homeless mentally ill people off the streets.

Posted by: SPer at July 2, 2007 4:01 PM

Adult Protective Svcs may be able to help her if she wants to be helped. But if you're ever dealing with a truly lunatic tenant (as I once was), do not, repeat, do not, call them. If they show up and determine said tenant is in need of their aid, you may never be able to get rid of them, lease or no lease...and when said tenant screams obscenities at the top of her lungs all night keeping you and all your neighbors awake in addition to stalking and threatening you on the street (and declaring she'll blow up your house), your sympathy with the mentally ill homeless will start wearing pretty thin.

Posted by: Despina at July 2, 2007 4:03 PM

i'll bet it is far more inconvenient for the one pooing on the sidewalk than the one merely watching it.

if you call the local precinct they should have a relationship with the homeless outreach organization in the area that has a city contract to deal with situations like these (mental illness, not excessive poop) and other issues that long term homeless people frequently have. (sorry don't know for boerum hill, live in prospect heights) the work they do will not interfere with anything in the official-type way that despina raises. additionally, generally (i went out to observe "rounds" with one in manhattan and spoke to many of them for some research i was doing)they actually take the time to get to know and build trust with all of the homeless people on their route. this makes them much more successful in terms of homeless people wanting to get off the street and access services. realistically, though, it takes time. who knows, but, its worth a try.
on a less serious note, she seems to be full of sh#@. who poops that much?!? get her some immodium.

Welcome to Brooklyn, Hipsters and Yuppies!!

Often times when the police intercede, if the person deemed an EDP (Emotionally Disturbed Person) becomes boisterous or "out of control" they are then arrested. Several have even been killed! Remember Eleanor Bumpers and the Orthodox Jewish man in Bay Ridge. Although officers receive training, they are not mental health professionals and the New York City Department of Correction has become the new Mental Institution. It is now required that every Correction Officer take 40 hours of Mental Health Training with a yearly recertification. But when you mix the volatile personalities of the mentally ill and the sociopaths who commit real crimes together in close quarters you have a mix that is dangerous for both the staff and the inmates many of whom are just mentally ill.

I live on Dean between Smith and Hoyt and recently saw a woman in a nice-ish car with the door (and her enormous a**) wide open at the curb in the middle of the afternoon. I just took it as a special New York moment, averted my eyes, and walked on. I do remember seeing toilet paper though.

I have a theory that every new yorker has one date with adult human feces. it's like jury duty. if you've had your encounter, consider yourself lucky.

I had mine in the early 90's. I was catsitting for a friend. I had to use their spatula to clean the step to their basement apartment, then throw away the spatula.

I blame the sourge of crack cocaine.

I can't believe I'm being scolded for defending the dignity of a homeless person and in a blog argument with people about whether it's bad to make fun of this woman pooping on stoops. And then being scolded for calling people on this blog posting 'callous' (OK, I could have done without the expletive...I'll give you that).

I've seen human poop many times in my 12 years here. Get over it.

If you want to do something about your 'problem':

Stop being such wimps. In fact, I'll call them and send them this posting as reference.

Heath and Michelle should host a anti poop dinner function at their home complete with Frank Zane and Atlantic Yard Opponents.

Oh and Maggie Gylenhall can be the their to host as well.

How is Sue Wolf going to promote her neighborhood now?

Hey Sally..can we set up a date or meet up sometime soon? You can poop and pee on me anytime. I have been searching for you all my life. Most women cringe when I ask them to crap and pee on me during lovemaking. I caught a glimpse of you last friday and saw your brown hole wink at me before you dropped the package of brown sausage links on my neighbors stoop. You ran off before I could lick your anus clean of excrement. Lets set up a meeting time and place.

Dear Brown Hole Luvin' Bob,

Birth is a private thing!!! Have you been taking my anal babies??? I've been leaving them for the Rich people on the Hill to care for. The street aint no place to raise a child. Apparently the only thing they like brown are their stone mansions. I've seen a woman invade my nest and drown my baby in bleach and water. Dirty Sanchezes for everyone!!! Get ready for a SHIT STORM!!!

Another child is on it's way, I have a corn craving. Look for the Harvest Moon tonight.

Brown Hole Sally.

If you find poo outside of your "Brown"stone, you probably deserve it! The poo fairy seeks fudgy retriPOOtion, on those who have more shit in their heads than in their asses!
Get off your blogs and get lives, you potpourried pooers!

Wow. This sounds like a woman who "lived" on Elizabeth St. in the city over 7 years ago. She crapped and peed on the corner of Elizabeth and Houston on a daily basis. We watched her from the store I was working in. It was just when the hood was getting ultra expensive.

Posted by: rosetta at July 9, 2007 4:59 PM

I few years ago when CIGNA Healthcare was in one of its several rounds of layoffs I worked in the Jersey City CIGNA office when I heard about the poopetrator in the Wilde Building up in Bloomfield CT. You see poop even happens in CT. Apparently a disgruntled employee was taking a poop everyday on the floor and then smearing words on the walls with the poop - this went on for weeks until they posted an armed guard outside the womens bathroom. Poo happens in all segments of society when people have had enough and have no where else to go. When I lived in JC my mother stopped by to visit me and couldnt contain her laughter because she said there was a horsesize poop in the vestibule. This I am sure was a homeless person who snuck in and relieved themselves. Living in Brooklyn now I havent come accross any poo on the steps but if i did my anger at the poo would have nothing to do with my feelings toward the individual who dropped it. Basically no one wants to pick up adult poop and no one wants to disrespect a human being who is obviusly not well. But guys poop is nasty and it smells and if my dog didnt make it and if my future kids didnt do it I dont want to pick it up.
