Development Watch: 377 Franklin Stalled No More

After stalling out for a few months this Spring (there was speculation that it had something to do with the structure being overbuilt), work at 377 Franklin Avenue resumed a few weeks ago and is looking like it's almost ready for walk-throughs. Even though the 12-unit building looks too bulky to us next to those brick townhouses, we'd rather see something like this (even if it is by Bricolage) than the horrible new Fedders row houses that have been spreading like a virus nearby. Anyone know who will be marketing these units?

If this is indeed Bricolage, then my hat's off to them for at least finally breaking away from their usual dullness.

how the hell is this not that bad, but the scrano project posted about earlier is so "out of scale" that you feel bad for the neighbors!!??
hypocrite

I agree. This is in Crown Heights, I believe. And we can use a little modernism... Hope they sell well and can't wait for the pics..

This is as bad as that project on State you commented on and worse as this is sooo wide .

We think some of you are missing our point about context. Our objection to State Street was based on context--which is a street of beautiful townhouses, not the inherent design. Likewise, here we're saying we'd prefer this design to crappy Fedders houses, which mar much of the adjacent blocks. We're NOT saying that we think this Franklin design is better than the State Street one.

is this from the east berlin school of architecture?

so in the context of things, this huge ugly looking structure is better than what is otherwise consistent in the neighborhood.oh i see. whatever. they are both ugly structures, out of character for their respective neighborhoods. that is the point.

I think it's quite nice actually. and, from what i can tell from the photo, it doesn't even stick way out in front of its neighbor for a change.

from the dob site, EM design is the most recent name linked to this, bricolage was from earlier permits

This looks a lot better in real life than on the photo - I quite like it. The apts seem to be of a nice size, and the building has a fairly airy (not so evident on the picture), modernist feel to it. A good addition to the neighborhood, it injects a little architectural diversity into the border lands between ch and bs - and will make the neighborhood better.

This is in Bed Stuy not Crown Heights, and while you are there check out Heavenly Crumbs a block north for one of the best bakeries in the city, while you are at it get onto shopbedstuy.com.

I agree this building does not look too bad in person, and the fact that it is on a corner helps with the issue of context... it would be more jarring in the middle of a row of townhouses. I am not bothered too much by the more modern design of some of the newer condos, as long as they try to stay relatively close to the neighborhood scale. There is a not bad condo development of DeKalb (lofts) with the same flavor, and now that it is occupied, I think it works.

bedstuyagent...this is CHTS. I'm going to go look at your site now.
I'll be sure to report back

bedstuyagent...you are a waste of time. a block north of...
... oh my god...
...I'm going to puke again.

Yes, it does look a little bulky nest to the brick townhouses. The best solution si to tear down the brick townhouses and build something nice

CHTS Wade T? Heavenly Crumbs is a block north of this building.

I believe Franklin and Quincy is considered Clinton Hill so you are both wrong.
Posted by: anon at July 13, 2007 8:51 PM
Classon is the border for Bed Stuy and Clinton Hill, and Crown Hghts. is the other side of Atlantic.
Posted by: anon at July 14, 2007 2:38 PM
Okay, one: the community board, zip code and council district boundaries are all on Classon. This is Bed Stuy.
Two: it is hard for me to see how a bunch of privileged rich folks snapping up the cookies at heavenly crumbs is good for anyone in the neighborhood. It won't improve life for the people trying to get by around there.
Already longtime
