MAS' Boat Ride Along the Brooklyn Waterfront

Following this morning's joint press conference between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Municipal Art Society to announce the Brooklyn waterfront's inclusion on this year's 11 Most Endangered list (a map of which can be found here), a group of press and other attendees were invited on a chartered water taxi for a narrated tour of the waterfront from Fulton Ferry up to Long Island City. As we were docking at the end, the fire department happened to be doing its annual blessing of the fleet part, which we captured above.

Nice pic Brownstoner. But that is the glorious Manhattan waterfront depicted here, not Brooklyn. Brooklyn's waterfront is still a POS. How about showing some "postcard" footage of that disgrace?

just look at the beautiful glass tower going up in place of those nasty old POS brick buildings. you're right 3:38/10:26, lets kncck the whole thing down and build more glass towers like the one shown here. that would really make new york great. like dubai!

Oh come on, Manhattan is Manhattan, and Brooklyn is Brooklyn. The history of both boroughs has dictated the skyline. For over 100 years commerce, businesses and the running of NYC have been steered to Manhattan. Most of the money that has ever been spend in NYC has gone to Manhattan. Brooklyn has spent the last century being relegated to second class citizenship and working class industry, at worst, with beautiful suburb-like enclaves for the captains of industry to escape to, at best. It is unrealistic to expect a similar waterline, or downtown. I for one, am very glad they are quite different.

If Brooklyn had stayed a separate city over 100 years ago, I wonder what changes would or wouldn't have happened for both the county of Kings, and the City of New York.

Yes, Jersey City is becoming more and more successful and beautiful everyday at the expense of Brooklyn waterfront, economy and overall development. When it comes to urban planning, you guys are clueless.

That's why it's important to have powerful and successful business men like Michael Bloomberg running this city and not brainless crunchy granola types.
