Development Watch: 17 Bergen Street

17bergen04.jpg 17bergen03.jpg
The loft building at 17 Bergen Street, which sold for $2,800,000 back in April 2005, is in the process of getting a complete makeover by Jeffrey Cole Architects. When the dust settles (and the Stop Work Order is lifted), you'll be looking at a 4-unit, 11,270-square-foot condo building. Kind of a strange mix of materials but we bet the interiors will be nice judging from the other things on the site. Any chatter in the neighborhood on this one? GMAP P*Shark DOB

FUGLY!!!

Met the owner at the site shortly after work started & he seemed to have very good ideas and was interested in doing something of better quality. It looks pretty good to me. Great area if you like the busy Manhattan vibe. Some people say this block btw Smith & Court isn't desirable because Vinny's Iron Works buildings but it's really quite lovely, a row of restored clapboard homes, 2 schools & right near everything.

It must be the relentless heat and humidity the last few days, but that building looks to me like a big ole'
orangey creamsicle... kind of interesting though, wouldn't call it "fugly" though...

That is a hell of a lotta sq footage for 4 units!
And potentially spitting distance to both the rumored TradeJoe and McDonalds. Who could ask for more. :)

Those colors are hideous. The exterior reminds me of the new construction junk you see in the Southwest and California. Uggh.

i dunno. orange houses spice up all the brown and grey that dominates so much of brooklyn. must everything be the same?

It's not going to look exactly like the (damn) picture people. They never do.

I think this looks great. It's a wide street, and there's already a lot of variation between the houses and other buildings on the block, so it doesn't break up some pre-existing pattern or anything. Keeps a little carriage house feel with the garage and the windows are nice and big. Nice job.

Looks decent to me. The orange brick will eventually fade in the dirty New York air... giving it that old puebla feeling.

the split column thang on top is cool

I especially like the non-complying roof overhang at the top and the illegal outer court at the front.

DOB are you out there??????????

How is the roof-overhang non-complying?
(it does not appear to extend beyond building).
ANd what is on 'outer court'?
Only thing I see is illegally parked car...not allowed to block sidewalk with parked car.

That's why you are not an Architect.
