Development Watch: New Hotel for 3rd Avenue?
Why sell used cars when you can get in on the building boom that has been creeping down the slope of The Slope? Rather than sell the property they've held for the past four decades, the owners of the lot at the corner of 3rd Avenue and President Street have decided to develop it themselves. Unfortunately, their first attempt to get the Department of Buildings to sign off on a 18,000-square-foot hotel met was rejected three weeks ago so we can only assume they've gone back to the drawing board. I'm glad it was rejected. I live across the street from this development and this is a stupid place for a hotel. There is a Holiday Inn Express right around the corner. I hate to say it but I think it's well suited for a modest condo development. It's one block from the R & M train.

condos make sense but its not zoned for residential, hence the hotel use

I live on the opposite corner and I also think condos would make sense. But due to the commercial zoning I think the best thing would be a moderate to large supermarket. I hate having to walk all the way to 5th ave to go to a decent market.
And with the burgeoning mix of yuppies, hipsters, and old blue collar italians in the neighborhood, a supermarket here would be a great money maker!

I'm all for the supermarket. I'm just worried that with Whole Foods rolling in, the'd be crushed.

Good point on Wholefoods, I think that is definately a threat. By from What I know of wholefoods they cater primarily to the Yippie class and I dont think I want to spend $8.00 a pound for organic chicken and the like.
A normal supermarket would be a nice alternative, but with wholefoods I admit it might be tougher than I first realized.
