Something Afoot on Ocean Avenue?

Our Spidey sense started tingling when we drove past Ocean Avenue between Newkirk and Ditmas on Saturday on the way back from a dip at Brighton Beach. The front doors of both 1000 Ocean Avenue (top) and 1010 Ocean Avenue (bottom) were wide open and this truck was parked in the driveway in between. Both houses look uninhabited. Number 1000 hasn't changed hands in decadesand looks the worse for it. The last time Number 1010 made a blip on the screen at the Department of Buildings was back in 1996 when the owner's application to turn the house into a medical center was rejected. Can anyone from the 'hood shed any light onto either situation? Update: It looks like the recent sale of Number 1010 for $1,500,000 just hit Property Shark and that the former owner is in Chapter 7.

An "architectural salvage" truck has been parked in front of 1000, the Van Ness House, on and off for at least the past year, and I've seen the front door open several times. Of course, I was hoping that meant someone was restoring it...
Both houses are in Ditmas Park (proper) and are therefore landmarked.
You can learn more about the history of both houses at: http://home.att.net/~ebasics/dp.html

More than likely, they were there stripping every last piece of detail out of the house. When they get done, someone will buy it and make some kind of sheetrocked walled school, center, medical office, or whatever. You will see the contents, vastly overpriced, at somewhere like Olde Goode Things or Demolition Depot. What a shame.

Preservationista - That's what I originally, thought, too... But the same truck (I forget which company) was there for what seemed like years! I figured if they were pillaging the place, it would have been done a litttle faster. Just parked there...Deep down, I guess I knew it was just wishful thinking. Alas...

B-stoner,
I believe 1010 was up for Auction a few months ago as you reported it. Does anyone know if it sold and for how much? New owners plans???

Ah, that's why it looked familiar...

I've seen that truck in the driveway of 1000 Ocean for a long time. An acquaintance who lives nearby gave me some neighbor-scoop, but I forget what it was (it wasn't good)...I'll try to contact him and ask again. It's got that 'haunted house' vibe that sets my Spidey-sense tingling, too. (Or as my husband says, 'What is it with you and peeling paint?')

I thought it didn't go to auction in the end...

pretty sure it didn't get auctioned b/c there's no record of the deed transferring

On Property Shark, 1010 Ocean Avenue's recent sale record is $1,500,000 on 3/6/2007. It wasn't auction?

They were asking $875k for it just four years ago...

There have ben some men working on 1010 (currently used as a church) for the last month or so. I pass by both every morning-such a shame -I wish someone would restore them -they are both stunning.
