Dentists In, Borders Out at One Hanson
As many will recall, the Williamsburgh Bank Building spent recent decades serving as office space primarily for dentists. As part of the renovation that is converting the upper floors to residential condos, the developers of what is now called One Hanson Place set aside about 30,000 square feet of space for dental practices and are now selling the space as commercial condos. In total, there are 15 medical office suites (though they don't have to be used for medical purposes) that have been carved out of the bottom seven floors of the building; the offices will have their own entrance on Ashland Place. The listing value of the commercial space is $17 million. Bids for the space are due to Eastern Consolidated by 3 p.m. on May 30...In other One Hanson news, The Post reported today that a deal that would have brought Borders book store to the 35,000-square-foot vaulted space on the ground floor has been killed by an untimely corporate reorganization. What would you like to see in that space?

B&N then please.

A small museum to Brooklyn history.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 11:10 AM
how about a bank?
(and there is a museum already for Brooklyn history if you or any other readers really so interested in it about it on Pierrepont St)
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 11:13 AM
A gym (nysc, equinox, ballys, golds).

11:05,
You have obviously not seen the space to say that you'd like to see a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. While those places may be a welcome addition to the area, they are not appropriate for the beautiful space in the ground floor. I think a bank, bookstore, or library could be the only options for the space. Any other retail place would feel out of place in my opinion.

a food market of some sort. something gourmet and gorgeous like food emporium under the 59th st. bridge.
Posted by: pietro at May 23, 2007 11:41 AM
when the project was first announced, the developers talked about a high end restaurant (cipriani was given as an example of what they had in mind)
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 11:54 AM
I thought the reference to the bank was a joke. In the same vien, I was going to suggest something equally useless, like a realtor or an eyeglass store and we could have our own little montague street.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 11:56 AM
I second Trader Joe's. All of the AY naysayer's will stop grumbling, believe me.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:02 PM
I also think that a bank or bookstore would be a fitting addition.
The space in One Hanson where the old Williamsbugh Savings Bank was located was so elegant... hate to think of the space being turned into any kind of a food store.

I want a TJs!!!!!!!
Posted by: Bergenite at May 23, 2007 12:07 PM
Or Equinox gym - that would be great!!!
Posted by: bergenite at May 23, 2007 12:14 PM
This space is to good to be squandered on ordinary services or common chain stores. I would like to see an environment like GCS -- small, specialty shops (local I would hope), a nice bar/lounge.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:22 PM
Considering it is across from the AY Arena, it will probably be a 'Scores'
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:28 PM
11:29, have you sen the balducci's grocery store on 8th ave at 14th street in manhattan. the space is just as beautiful as the lobby of 1 hanson and they've managed to fit a beautiful (albeit very high end) food market in the space.
Posted by: anon at May 23, 2007 12:29 PM
No more banks...perhaps a porn shop?
Posted by: AA at May 23, 2007 12:29 PM
Perfect for a car dealership!
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:41 PM
It should be a bank,
There's a lot of money in the hood now. what better use? Besides the space is a landmark, one of the few indoor landmarks, so the walls and floor and I guess even the tellers desks cannot be changed without special permission.
Posted by: anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:51 PM
get borders back to table, slice off a piece for an apple store and another piece for a rain forest cafe (for the kiddies)
Posted by: jay at May 23, 2007 12:57 PM
Uh duh. T.G.I.Fridays, obviously.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 12:57 PM
I thought they were putting in a Citibank? Isn't that confirmed?
Posted by: bergenite at May 23, 2007 1:01 PM
make it the largest sports restaurant and bar in NYC.
ESPN meets T.G.I.Fridays

12:29 is right - Balducci's is now located in a landmarked bank interior at 14th and 8th. It can be done. But I think 1 Hanson is a helluva lot bigger than the Balducci's location.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 1:02 PM
I vote for a high end restaurant with bar, or a nice bookstore (Waterstone's maybe?).

best buy
if it's good enough for 15 central park west, it's good enough for one hanson.
kidding, i'd like to see a gourmet grocery/wine store situation. the area needs something like this desperately.
i can't get ALL my food at pathmark.
Posted by: anon at May 23, 2007 1:13 PM
There should be a Grand Central Market style space in the banking lobby. With similar types of vendors. Connect it to the subway entrance in the building, and all of Brooklyn would shop there.
Posted by: DC at May 23, 2007 1:20 PM
that's a superb idea, 1:20 and i agree is would do great there.
a bakery, a cheese shop, wine, sandwiches...
i have a feeling they'd rather just let in one big tenant and be done with it, but i agree and think yours is much better.
Posted by: anon at May 23, 2007 1:32 PM
12:22 and 1:20 same idea.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 1:39 PM
I think it's historical, and they have to preserve quite a bit in the lobby, not just the space, but some of the lamps and the entry tables that you find in banks and post offices. It could be tough to convert, and meet the historical requirements.

Two Words... Wal-Mart
Posted by: of course at May 23, 2007 2:38 PM
"no more banks -maybe a porn shop"
You gotta chuckle. An upscale porn shop could do very well there, and the tellers cages could divide the merchandise by um, area of interest.

Actually I wish they'd just tear down the whole WSB building. It is too tall, it isnt in context with the low rise nature of Brooklyn, it casts shadows plunging the nearby neighborhood into darkness, it isnt 'human scale' and it wasn't built organically and we dont need anymore expensive condos in Brooklyn

ikea

I second the Scores idea. After getting drunk at the Nets game, my buddies and I could stagger over there and enjoy the company of some well-endowed young ladies.
(Insert joke about getting hit by a car on Atlantic and Flatbush)
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 4:04 PM
Great idea re: Grand Central type market. That would be an excellent addition.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 23, 2007 6:11 PM
The interior of the old Wiliamsburgh Bank on the ground floor of One Hanson is all marble, with a 63' vaulted ceiling, 40' windows and absolutely gorgeous mosaics...
It's obvious going by a few suggestions made for future use of the space, that some posters have never even been inside the building... :(
Posted by: bren at May 23, 2007 8:50 PM
Why doesn't the Brooklyn Public Library shelve their plans to build the ultra expensive library for the Performing Arts nearby and just buy this space and modify it for its use instead? That would make more sense to me. Years down the road if they raise the capital to build the building they could always sell this space back or give up their lease or whatever.
Or else why not start a roller rink now that Empire has closed. That would be awesome.

Grand Central Market is a GREAT idea. So glad Borders isn't coming. Enough of the big box and bigchain stores. Let's support the small unique businesses. They're what make Smith St., Court St. and DUMBO interesting. Let's keep Brooklyn unique.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 24, 2007 8:58 AM
I would like to see Brooklyn become less unique in many ways.
