Fulton Street to Get a Bank (Finally)

With the recent news that the old Bodegas space on Fulton and Clinton is now spoken for, readers have been asking what the deal is with the former dance studio across the street. We did a little digging and it turns out that, barring interference from the state banking authorities, a North Fork bank will be opening in this location in the next few months. The Pratt Area Community Council (which does not own the space) has been working hard behind the scene for years to get a bank to open on Fulton Street, so we bet they had a hand in making this happen. Residents of southern Clinton Hill will no longer have to decide between hiking over the Myrtle Avenue or hitting a bodega ATM. Let's just hope that bureaucracy does not get in the way of a much-needed service coming to the neighborhood.

HUZZAH HUZZAH! We have arrived! I am very happy about this. I was sick of that Washington Mutual sign taunting me! (when it is not a bank, it is a home loan office)
What I used to do before when I wanted the security of a real bank, I either went to Carver Savings on Fulton & Nostrand, or took a bus ride to downtown Brooklyn.

I am SO over Washington Mutual! Jerks. North Fork, maybe i'll switch. My real dream was that a restaurant or bar (or something to keep the corner lit and active at night) would open, but a bank will do.

Mr. B, rather than getting in the way of this clearly much needed service on Fulton Street, bueaucracy is actually facilitating it. Community Board 2 and the Brooklyn Borough Board both voted to endorse the creation of a state Banking Development District (www.banking.state.ny.us/bdd.htm) along Fulton, from South Elliott to Bedford.

Good to know, g-man. We were referring specifically to the state board that has to put its stamp on this.

The fact that North Fork is applying to form a BDD adds a layer of bureaucracy at the state but also motivates everyone to get it done.

Wait a second, a dance studio closing in order to make way for a bank is a good thing? Wow.

here goes fulton! Oh please, from your mouth to God's ears. We've been living on the edge of this street with a birds-eye view for 20 years and have been perplexed for much of that as to why it's not taking off with more services, shops and life. I have all my fingers and toes crossed.
