Comments

The Windsor Terrace listing has already been deleted.

The Center Slope one is a good deal, I bet they'll have at least 50 applicants.

The PLG one is really beautiful, I love those apartments with all the little rooms strung together. But are they allowed to limit how many people live in the apartment? Doesn't that constitute discrimination against families with children? And when they say "front patio", are they talking about the space next to the stoop?

Renters have no place on this blog.

Not a good week for pet owners or smokers! Strange comment about laundry in the slope apartment listing too. I'm sure they didn't mean to come off this way, but it sounds like, we have access to laundry machines we won't let you use? Weird.

yes the little area next to the stoop is called the "patio". I thought that was rather amusing. This place in PLG seems to be getting desperate. It was first 2K a month, then 1800 a month and now they are willing to rent out each room.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 11:59 AM

how about some up-market picks. For less than the monthly nut on a mortgage on a boring 2br floor-thru, you can rent some pretty fab places. Lets see them.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 12:11 PM

Doing the rooming house thing can attract less desireable tenants. You get more transient people when renting out rooms, who are less invested in being a good tenant so they can stay long term.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 12:11 PM

hey, troll at 10:54, it would be good to remember that over 2/3 of New Yorkers are renters. I think it's a good feature, and Mr. B should do it more often. What do you think, renters just exist to defray mortgages? I love my brownstone as much as an owner would (perhaps more, in fact, because I live in it!)

Posted by: anonymous at May 17, 2007 1:03 PM

What's that? The patio is a nice play to have a drink and get caught in a drive-by?

Posted by: anon at May 17, 2007 1:09 PM

I'm confused -- where on the PLG listing does it say they're renting out rooms? And wouldn't that violate the property's zoning (unless it's zoned for an SRO)?

Posted by: babs at May 17, 2007 1:13 PM

I love renters...they pay 3/4 of my mortgage. That's an idiotic statement.

Posted by: kuroko at May 17, 2007 1:42 PM

"Renters have no place on this blog."

Then get off. You're renting from the bank and/or the government.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 1:53 PM

More rental information!

Posted by: anonymous renter at May 17, 2007 2:47 PM

Why do people even RESPOND to commenters like 10:54?

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 3:27 PM

You hush 3:52! The brownstoner troll may be a troll, but he\'s OUR troll! Mind your manners.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 4:07 PM

i guess the PLG owner change their mind about renting rooms. Yesteray they posted the apartment as rooms for rent, but today it was deleted.
oh well

Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 4:20 PM

bummer attitude by the posters re: renters, but i suppose not surprising. many of the owners who peruse this site would be renters in today's market, so i don't see where the attitude comes from.

Posted by: anonymous at May 17, 2007 5:10 PM

"renter", "owner".... geeze!
either one gets seriously ill, or loses a job, as many folks did back in 1988, you all will be facing eviction/foreclosure!

"play nice" kids and stop this petty bickering!

I think it is good to see what rents are going for whether you are a renter or a buyer. Can't figure out why there is so much negativity. I thought the place on Macon was a good deal though I really wondered how the ceiling got so low on a 2nd or 3rd floor of a brownstone (said apt. 2 which would be one of those two floors).
And yes, if I hadn't purchased an apt in manhattan more than a decade ago I wouldn't have a brownstone. I am grateful and thankful for what I have and believe myself to be lucky. Everyone should be grateful for what we have. We do not live in Iraq. Lets stop this petty bickering.

As a proper person, someone who inherited their brownstone from old money, I say please keep these common mortgage oiks off of the board. If you can't afford to buy the place outright with cash then find your own debt-slave blog. I'm awfully tired of dealing with all these riff-raff mortgagors.

"Lord Astor", you made my day and gave me a good chuckle this morning!
You truly summed it up in humorous fashion... no room on this blog for anyone to put on "airs" as Gran'ma
would say!

I own a 2-family. Knowing what rents are in my 'hood is of interest and value to me.

Posted by: John at May 18, 2007 11:36 AM

duh - because its about brownstones.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 18, 2007 1:23 PM

PLG guy has been trying to rent that apartment for months. He started at $2500.

Maybe I should start calling my stoop a "patio". I can set up a lawn chair next to my trash cans.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 18, 2007 2:43 PM

well apparently you are easily fooled - why not look at those rentals at top of this page. Are you just pretending to be an idiot?

Posted by: Anonymous at May 18, 2007 4:08 PM

No more information on limestone mansions either. Or those new places at AY. Please stick to brownstones and their owners only.

I agree with myself.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 18, 2007 4:54 PM

First of all, renters market have some correlation to buyer/seller's makret.I think it is not a bad idea to have information about renting market even you already own apartment or are buying one.

Second of all, what's so superior about having a place that you have to be so arrogant just beccause you are not a renter? Writing a mean comment just reveals how third-rated human being the person is, weather or not you own a place. Why don't you just ignore the information if you are not interested in?

I think the protesting of listings of brownstone rental units pretty much proves a lot of the posters on this site are NOT owners of brownstones.

Here's why seeing the going rates and comments on rents for brownstone apartments is useful - hello, it tells you how much income you may potentially make! Which you know, helps pay that mortgage. Unless you're buying a single-family house and can afford to not have tenants, then you should be very very very interested in the going rents in a neighborhood. I can't even understand why you all can't figure that out. Except like I said, you're poseurs who aren't really serious about buying a house. This is a great feature and it should continue. This is supposed to be a site that provides a resource to brownstone owners. And knowing how much the rent can contribute towards their mortgage IS a valuable resource. Duh.

I disagree, 3:11pm. You can research on Craigs List but you don't get the opportunity to see user reviews about what people think of the asking rent rates for the apartments, and seew comments about the renovations a homeowner did to the rental apartment. Most brownstone owners find themselves being landlords for the first time. And it's confusing how much renovating to do or not, and things to consider.

Well if it's about what makes "news" for a real estate blog, I happen to think the heat a neighborhood has among hip young renters directly correlates to what's happening in the house market in those neighborhoods. These kinds of renters play an important role in attracting amenities to an underserved neighborhood. I found it interesting to see several apartments lined up next to each other, for comparison. And no, actually I don't have time to spend an entire afternoon on Craigs List doing the research myself. I don't have an apartment to offer in my house, but I like to see what's out there, just out of general interest in the RE market. But if it offends you so much to have to scroll past one little box on the blog, then sure, vote against it. I just don't understand all the venom against any discussion of renters here. It's really weird. Self-loathing perhaps?

"Cheapens the whole site"? What a ridiculous thing to write. What a ridiculous thing to think.
