Development Watch: The Edge

the_edge_april10.jpg
It's been a year since we checked in with the massive Williamsburg waterfront development known as The Edge. While we're sure plenty's been happening behind the scenes, not a whole heck of a lot had happened on the ground until last week when backhoe (obscured by the porto-potties in this photo) arrived on site and dug a ceremonial hole. Current plans for the site (which runs from North 5th to North 7th Streets along Kent Avenue) call for 1,000 residential units and 60,000 square feet of retail spread over three buildings, the tallest of which will top out at 29 stories. Of particular interest to the broader L-train-riding community: a water taxi pier at the end of North 6th Street. A look at DOB filings reveals that the architect is Stephen B. Jacobs, who's also responsible for the Boulevard East project on Boerum Place.

I'm reserving judgement onthe buildings but one thing's for sure, those views will be killer. Aare there plans for a new supermarket as part of one of these big new developments? The one on 6th street won't cut the mustard for the new fancy-pants who will move into these places.

Nothing against Steven Jacobs, but throughout the rezoning, the developer presented designs/renderings by Enrique Norten. City Planning even touted the involvement of a world-famous architect in their presentations. As soon as the rezoning was approved, the international architect was out and Jacobs was in.

I agree, the views will be killer! I hope there is a bigger supermarket and/or pharmacy, as most people will probably want to have those amenities right downstairs.

Any word about which of the towers will be built first? The one closer to Kent or the ones on East River edge?

hey, Stephen B. Jacobs is every bit the visionary that Enrique Norten is.

Stephen B. Jacobs is responsible for the condos on Grand between Lexington and Gates in Clinton Hill.

The brown townhouses? That must have been many years ago.

Word to the wise: never believe anything during a re-zoning except for the zoning itself. Don't even look at the renderings. None of that, or even the ownership, is part of the approval process.

Anonymous 2:01: Yes the brown townhouses. Each contains 2 duplex condos. They were built in 1989.
