What Can Orange Do For You? Branding the IBZ

In the Brownstoner Photo Pool on Flickr, The Real Janelle posts this photo of one of the brand spankin' new signs have been popping up around Williamsburg and Greenpoint in recent days. The Williamsburg-Greenpoint zone is one of 16 areas around the city (see the map on the jump for the others) that the Mayor's Office for Industrial and Manufacturing Businesses has designated in an effort to "foster high-performing business districts by creating competitive advantages over locating in areas outside of New York City." To alleviate the threat of displacement that has hung over many businesses during the recent decade-long real estate boom, the administration has committed to fighting any efforts to rezone the IBZs for residential usage; it also provides a one-time tax incentive of $1,000 per employee to relocating firms. Does anyone know how successful this program has been at keeping industrial businesses in the city?

It's Greenpoint-Williamsburg (note the sign), not Williamsburg-Greenpoint. It always has been. How insecure is Williamsburg that they have to change the alphabetical order. What babies. Get a binky.

$1,000 per employee isn't much when a user can pay $100 PSF to buy a space in NJ vs. over $200 in Brooklyn.

What does the pink Industrial Ombudsmen Area Mean?

Are these residential areas within the Industrial District?

The pink is mixed residential and industrial. There was a lot of political wrangling over the area of the IBZ south of Johnson Avenue. I hadn't heard of the Industrial Ombudsman Area, but that makes sense.

The Ombudsmen's Zone is the way EDC and City Planning designate the "You are going to lose your job zone."

Nicolo is right. The Ombudsmen Zone means that city isn't going to fight as hard as in the orange zone to keep it industrial.

the ombudsman area means that if you have any problems with the City (e.g. permitting issues, or erroneous parking violations) you can call a designated ombudsman for the area and they will help you deal with it but putting you in touch with the right agencies or knowing ahead of time how to solve common problems for industrial businesses.
