This Tax Season, Will You E-File?

5efile-computer.gifAccording to the Daily News, "Last year, 4.2 million New Yorkers filed their income taxes online, and many are saying there's no going back." Anthony Giammarino, a steamfitter from Brooklyn, told the paper "Automating the process won't make it harmful. Last year was the first year that I e-filed and had my refund direct deposited. I thought it was excellent." According to the article, "The IRS contends that tax returns filed electronically are 20% more accurate than paper returns." And apparently, the IRS is trying to make e-filing even easier...

"Free File, found at irs.gov, is geared to people making $52,000 or less. A public/private partnership, which includes tax prep guidance from the big three, H&R Block's TaxCut, Intuit's TurboTax and 2nd Story Software's TaxACT, Free File is aimed at helping self-filers do so electronically, without the help of a pro. It steers filers to the program that best suits them."

So, who is planning on e-filing this year? Does anyone have e-filing horror stories or success stories they'd like to share? And do any freelancers out there make use of e-filing software — or is it just too complicated?

I've used www.taxact.com for 5 years now... I'll never fill in another tax form again. :)

I will not efile as long as the IRS outsources this. Why on earth can't a taxpayer efile their taxes directly with the IRS?

2 years ago, my first year as a full-time freelancer, I barely made a living wage, and I applied for a lot of deductions as start-up costs. I used a reliable accountant friend and STILL got audited. It really sucked. (After hours of meetings and digging up all my receipts, I only ended up having to pay an extra $200 or so.) I'd like to use online software, but now I'm afraid to.

They charge you for e-filing. Plus, I have to pay both the Feds and the State. Better for me to mail it on April 15, and have the bastards get the money a day or two later.
