yeah, that's the answer. charge more at the meters to reduce parking problems in park slope. gotta love these morons...not.

Permitted parking? Are you kidding? So, there will be spots that are empty and held for people who live on these blocks, no additional commercial parking provided and this is supposed to solve the problem? I can only see this “solution” making the problem worse for business and better for the wealthy residents—typical.

I believe article says Transportation Alternatives study suggests permit parking...hardly a group interested in wealthy residents ....so don't know what you mean by 'typical' other than being cynical.
But I agree that I think parking permits are bad idea for PkSlope or other areas where the group is pushing for them. Wish they would stick to promoting cycling in city and stay out of the other issues.

I'm all for (paid) permitted parking; then again, I live in the neighborhood. People always say that parking on the street is a privilege, not a right, and that's true; so why not make car owners like me pay for that privilege and get revenue out of us?

I agree, though, that nothing will make things better for businesses short of providing more parking spaces. But short of building parking garages--where, exactly?--I don't see how that's going to happen.

Permit parking is awful. I lived in a neighborhood that implemented permit parking and had to revoke it when local businesses suffered.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2007 10:02 AM

How about only overnight permit parking. At least it would get people who register their cars in Maryland and New Jersey to save on insurance would have to register in NY. That would also lower our insurance rates (the highest in the country) and maybe get really bad drivers off the street.

How about all those homeowners with cars start using public transportation like the rest of us hoi poloi? For nineteen years in brownstone Brooklyn I've managed just fine without a car. Less pollution, more spare change. Connect with your inner Al Gore.

anon 11:09

we use public transportation every day, and only rarely use the car, but with 3 animal and kids, we need the car to leave town. the car is only used every 2 weeks or so, but it is neccessary

Is anyone else following the search for a new Park Slope slogan? I've seen a couple that I liked. "Land of Entitlement" was pretty good. My favorite so far is "Park Slope: What's Ours is Ours". lol

11:12(a), if you only use your car every couple of weeks, shouldn't you keep it in a garage? at least you wouldn't have to move it all the time for no reason, and we'd benefit from one less car clogging up the street.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2007 1:36 PM

I'm not 11:12, but the main reason I don't keep my car in a garage is there isn't one within 10 blocks or so of me. (I use it more than every couple weeks, but not every day.) Could I put it in a garage and walk the 10 blocks? Sure, but it wouldn't be worth it and I don't feel morally obligated to. I'm not entitled to a parking space on my block, but neither is somebody driving across town to shop at Matter or eat at Blue Ribbon or whatever.

Which is why again I say, if the city is going to let people like me store cars on the street, it might as well charge us for it.

Posted by: linusvanpelt at February 27, 2007 1:47 PM

i hate having a car in the city, i really do. i'm better than that.

it's just that i really like it sometimes and find it convenient...um, i mean, i REALLY NEED a car. that's it: NEED.

Thoughts on the house that Belicheck bought in PS? Assuming it was in good condition (with at least some original detail), what did he get it for a good price? What would it sell for today (given that it is right near the park and 4000 SF)? Thoughts???

If you only use a car every couple weeks RENT a car! It's far cheaper, once you figure in costs of purchase/insurance/tickets for owning one. And far more practical. There is an Enterprise on 3rd Ave and 9th Street that's great, they've always had a car when I needed one. You can get luxury cars too; we got a Volvo once. Anybody who bothers to even recycle and also owns a car while living in NYC, is a total hypocrite. This is completely ridiculous. All we Park Slopers totally benefit from the success of the commercial district in Park Slope, by a huge margin in the way it's raised quality of life and property values. Show a little appreciation to these businesses - get rid of your completely unnecessary cars.

NO PARK SLOPE

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2007 5:03 PM

"Anybody who bothers to even recycle and also owns a car while living in NYC, is a total hypocrite."

Scientists have discovered that rental cars burn gasoline and emit exhaust, much in the same way that privately owned cars do.

Posted by: linusvanpelt at February 27, 2007 5:06 PM

How is recycling hypocritical? Isn't it the law?

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2007 6:24 PM

I live in PS and have 2 cars parked on the street.

Don't thread on me.

11:12 here--we do park in a garage, and the reason we don't zip car, is because when we go out of town, we can't usually get one that will fit all of us including car seats and animals. Also at least one animal, and sometimes one child gets sick in the car. We would be banned from all rentals. We used to rent before so many animals and kids, even from enterprise, and had trouble returning the car in a reasonable manner. It is very different now with children and animals. We do pay for the convenience, and try to be responsible neighbors. Yes we recycle, bought the most energy effecient car we could at the time for the size we needed. The car is 4 years old and has 24, 000 miles on it. It will last a very long time. We resisted getting a car for a long time, but eventually it made sense.

Where are there garages in Park Slope and what do they charge monthly? (Considering moving to the neighborhood, and need my car.) thanks

Posted by: Anonymous at February 28, 2007 10:20 AM

Zip Car offers SUV's. Not just economy cars. And Enterprise has plenty of SUV's too.

Linus Van Pelt, the GREATER NUMBER OF CARS on the street driving around and around and around looking for parking, are belching exhaust and pollution into the air all around the expensive houses of Park Slope. One would think the homeowners would care about their children breathing that in, and about the effect on the environment, if they are the concerned Liberals they claim to be. It's like why bother to vote a certain way, and to do something easy like recycle (and feel good about it) if you do something that causes as much harm as owning a car in a city where one doesn't need a car. That's the point I was making.
