Whoops. A little rushed there.

Posted by: brownstoner at February 8, 2007 11:56 AM

Fire is out and they are cleaning up. We all hope that the architectural details on the first floor were not damaged.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 12:21 PM

12:21 - how do you know it's out? looks like the ground floor, was it the theater?

" Fire is out and they are cleaning up. We all hope that the architectural details on the first floor were not damaged."

architectural details ?? What about the people working in there ? What about the firefighters? ASSHOLE

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 8, 2007 12:29 PM

We KNEW there were no injuries (EMTs were there but no one was being treated). And the fire trucks were leaving so it was out.

re: 12:21
This is a site devoted to the discussion of architecture-

I think it's a given that we all are interested in the human beings involved- and their safety.

No need to jump down somone's throat and call him/her and asshole for staying on point.

I would personally slaughter babies for prime fort green real estate.

You must be broker.

Babies, huh? Depends. Where in FG?

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 1:21 PM

This is what Mr. B. quit his job for?

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 1:38 PM

"Firefighters this, firefighters that"...you people DISGUST me...what about the BABY FIREFIGHTERS?

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 1:45 PM

That's what I call a hot property.

Posted by: z at February 8, 2007 1:46 PM

who cares about people, architectural details last a lot longer and they're worth more in the long run.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 1:47 PM

Architectural details don't get on your case when you don't come home for dinner.

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 1:56 PM

I'm sure a stroller pushing park slope mother started the fire.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 2:01 PM

All it takes is just one ass to flip the whole script.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 2:11 PM

"..baby firefighters?" thanks for the laugh i was having a slow day.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 2:15 PM

Oink oink.

Listen, if I may speak for the pigs, it's not that we don't care about the people in the building, and the firefighters helping them. It is, of course, assumed by any reasonable person that the people matter above all else. To have to make the obvious comment of "Oh, dear, I hope nobody got hurt" is almost insulting, because that part is just a given.

But of course, you knew that already. So stop trying to stir up trouble where there is none, and let us have our snarky fun.

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 2:25 PM

Oink oink

Americans have become better humorists, maybe someday we'll grow up and become French, all snotty and serious like you Mon Deiu.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 2:46 PM

Oh, please. (re: 2:33) Amy is exactly right. It's absolutely absurd that you are taking this discussion to represent "a symbol of what Americans have become." You insult other posters as repulsive and immature, and you don't even have the balls to identify yourself? Pathetic.

I have been a faithful brownstoner reader since the site was an infant, chronicling Mr. B.'s reno and nothing else, when 99 out of 100 comments were spam. I had to walk uphill (both ways) in the snow barefoot to read brownstoner. So I do know the readers very well.

There are two separate and very different things going on on brownstoner in general, and you're lumping them together. One (and I find it a problem too) is that many discussions degenerate into the sincere bashing of Park Slope moms, or certain neighborhoods, or what have you. It doesn't seem to matter what the topic or the problem, there are two or three scapegoats that get dragged through the mud, and once a topic turns to a discussion about those scapegoats it's difficult to steer it right again.

The second thing going on is what happened on this thread. Someone on a website about architecture dared to make a comment about architecture, and was called as asshole for commenting on the architecture instead of the people. Since this was funny, and stupid, and inane, the pigs ran with it and made fun of this exchange. We were not making fun of a fire. We were making fun of political correctness in general. If you want to extrapolate a few sarcastic comments into the downfall of civilization as we know it, I suggest you stock up on Pepto Bismol. But I for one find political correctness mind-numbingly stupid and will continue to make fun of it when it rears its simple-minded head.

Oink oink indeed.

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 2:53 PM

Sorry, but where was the fire? Was it the theater? Now that we've established no one was hurt, were the architectural details damaged? Does anyone know?

Posted by: trudy lou at February 8, 2007 3:11 PM

talking about love is like dancing about architecture. did someone say architecture?

Posted by: Nietzsche at February 8, 2007 3:17 PM

There were 7 or 8 comments all by the same person trying to stir the pot. We just deleted them.

Posted by: brownstoner at February 8, 2007 3:40 PM

and i have just deleted your website from my favorites list.

long live the 1st ammendment.

Posted by: anon at February 8, 2007 3:49 PM

3:49, you'll be sorely mmissed

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 3:53 PM

What's pitiful is that Brownstoner can't run a single thread about a viable area of B'stone Bklyn, without the trolls shutting it down. Love it, hate it, or don't care either way, PLG is a part of brownstone Brooklyn, and Mr. B should be able to post a thread, or a listing about homes there without the incessant, silly, over the top trollage, the perpetrator(s) of which seem to have made it their life's mission to bring the nabe down. Shame, whoever you are. You ruin it for all of us.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 4:20 PM

For the newcomers, this is not a first amendment issue. The analogy we've made before is that this is more like being at a party at our house. You're welcome to express any opinion you like as long as you do so respectfully but if we think you're purposefully trying to ruin the party, you're no longer going to be welcome.

Unfortunately our judgment will never be perfect, but it's better than letting a few jerks piss in the water. Those of you who want to help the situation should sign up for and use TypeKey, as it makes it much easier to determine who's a real commenter. It also has the added benefit of making it easier for everyone to follow a comment thread.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 4:44 PM

Sorry, without the other side of the conversation it looks like I wasn't taking my meds.

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 4:51 PM

Brownstoners, go to yesterday's Lefferts Hotel thread and scroll down to the very end (2/8 comment at 4:55pm). The brownstoner troll has been identified! Finally!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 5:08 PM

How can we possibly discuss real estate and property values without taking into account the more general features of neighborhoods, including crime and especially violent crime? That's not realistic, and I for one want to know when a neighborhood is dangerous. I certainly don't think the people who voice concerns about safety should be brow beaten, whether or not you agree with them.

Posted by: Marisol at February 8, 2007 5:18 PM

Marisol, you are absolutely correct. But for a long time now there's been someone with a definite agenda against certain areas. There have been plenty of discussions about crime and safety in most neighborhoods that go really well (i.e. intelligent discussions about statistics, comments from people who live in the given area being discussed, first- or second-hand anecdotes about muggings, etc.). But whenever Prospect Lefferts Gardens is discussed, an anonymous poster (often trying to pretend that s/he is several different people talking to each other) hijacks the conversation in a very determined, relentless manner. This is not simply someone who doesn't like the neighborhood and has a strong opinion (and a lot of free time); this is someone who has made it her/his mission to misrepresent a neighborhood by posting multiple times as different people.

Once the discussions degenerate to that extent I usually stop reading, so other people surely have better insight on this subject than I do. But I just didn't want you to get the wrong impression about this site. And I've found that the most reasonable discussions about crime and safety usually happen in the forum section, when someone posts asking about a particular neighborhood (I'm a single woman, will I be able to walk home from the subway at night...). I don't think the troll bothers to read the forum section.

Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2007 6:09 PM

I love the house party analogy. It's the best way to approach free speech in this medium. Stay the course Mr. B.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 8, 2007 8:11 PM

That's funny I always thought that PLG has an organized get out the pro-Lefferts message that comes up a lot on this board even when nobody even brings up that neighborhood. I am absolutely sick of hearing about PLG and wish they would start their own pro-board or negative board or whatever. In fact my guess is that it's a real estate agent who lives in the area that is just hyping the neighborhood by pretending anyone else cares.

It's hilarious because this was about a fire in 110 Livingston Street and it turned into a "self-gratification fest" at the hands of people who probably have no interest or idea in good architecture and design, let alone Historic Preservation in the first place.

Naturally, if any firefighters or people were injured or died, we would have heard about it almost immediately. Considering that we didn't, let's assume everyone came out safely and that those hotheads who jumped down the throats of others can rest securely in the comfort of their own bizarre and gratuitous behaviour.

This is a great blog, but people are ridiculously sensitive and tempermental. I second 12:24PM by saying that I hope all architectural details and progress are preserved and since it seems like it was a small and rather uneventful fire, hopefully construction will be back on track soon.

Posted by: Justin at February 9, 2007 12:55 AM

I guess construction was getting close to finishing. Union rules must not finish. Welcome yo new york
