A Wig and a Mullet for Bar 4

444 7th ave
In keeping with the neighborhood m.o. of maxing out available FAR, the owners of 444 7th are tacking on a fourth floor and mezzanine to the existing three-story building that houses local watering hole Bar 4. The reader who sent in this pic likened the addition to the building getting a "wig and a mullet" which seems like a rather apt description to us. It feels oddly similar in spirit to our old friend 45 Third Place aka the Carroll Cardens Atrocity. GMAP P*Shark DOB

Are there no requirements for some kind of setback when adding a story like this? Chances of this not loooking hideous and stupid: slim. Another developer killing my buzz.

Woooweee!

All business in the front and all party in the back!

I feel like I'm in Florida. Daytona anyone?

Looks like a big ol' FAR wig to me. Anyone check this bad-boy out on BIS? Seems the extension is going a bit far back (pun intended) and to high for the new zoning...

Posted by: lostinbrooklyn at February 16, 2007 11:43 AM

Man, tons of violations on this bad-boy and they were working this last Saturday. Seems Mr. Van Brody (love that architect) is maxing out every square inch of the FAR in this rezoned R6A block.

Posted by: lostinbrooklyn at February 16, 2007 11:57 AM

This part of PS isn't landmarked??

Posted by: Anonymous at February 16, 2007 1:00 PM

Yeah...you're right, lostinbrooklyn. Shame on anyone who develops their lot to its full potential. How dare they. Really, I mean there are the designated FAR limits and then there are the limits that we all believe should be followed. How selfish to use every square inch available.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 16, 2007 1:03 PM

As for the project...I hope that they do something modern looking for the wig and mullet similar to the extension on 110 Livingston and not that BOHICA spot on Third.

Libertarinas unite!

My comment was meant that this particular maxing of the FAR, regardless of style, is totally out of context not only with the neighborhood, but the building as well. Develop all you want, but why so big? But, that's the name of the game, right?

Too bad. I am all for reuse, but this is a beautiful turn-of-the-century brick/brownstone building. Did it really need such a large and strange add-on?

The sloping modern rood addition and wrap around might work on a more modern structure. but, I'll bet this will be a glass & stucco job. Not really befitting the original structure, no?

And please, no "move back to Des Moines" comments...we can and should talk contextual aesthetics when it comes to reuse.

Posted by: lostinbrooklyn at February 16, 2007 1:30 PM

And big surprise, this addition has all kinds of DOB and ECB violations. Go figure.

And more of it this past Sat. afternoon 2/10/07, once again, caught on tape.

Here's illegal weekend work we witnessed and videotaped...

Up on YouTube right now.

Enjoy!

Me gaian.

Oops, YouTube said it was "live"

Give the link 5 mins or so to propagate their systems. Should have checked before posting. Sorry.

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 1:37 PM

It's live now.

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 1:50 PM

So basically, lost, your fight belongs at the doors of the LPC...oh wait...this stretch of PS is not landmarked is it.

Well...we should just landmark every single block we can just so contextualization is controlled one building at a time, and everyone decides to leave New York because it's "design by committee" everywhere you look and nothing gets built.

Unfortunately, proper use of context, while I agree with a few of the comments you make above about this particular building, is what separates the boy architects/developers from the men. But there is no law that prohibits boys from building.

And yes, sometimes stucco and glass, imho, can benefit the original building by making the its beauty stand on its own and not forcing it to meld with an addition that will most likely never blend in nor add any porportional value.

And by the way, if you indeed moved from Des Moines, I say..."Good move, and don't even think about going back!"

Posted by: Anonymous at February 16, 2007 1:59 PM

This place had been for sale all last fall. Did anyone buy it. Might be the reason for maxing out the far if they paid out the wazoo for it. FAR related... any apartments directly above bars are pretty much unlivable space.

Anon 1:59 (geeze, can i get a handle here or typekey, I hate the anon stuff).

Points well taken.

No, not from Des Moines...but due to my supposed NIMBY posts (remember folks it's "NIMB" now), I get told I should abandon the Boro...Bklyn for 20 years. Though summers in Southwestern Iowa on my Grandfolks lake front home were nice ;) More bass fishin' I could do in a lifetime.

Checked out that vid, yikes, what a monster!

Posted by: lostinbrooklyn at February 16, 2007 2:39 PM

Who would want to live above this bar? Living down the street from it is bad enough.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 16, 2007 2:53 PM

ccgh....you really need to get a life dude ..Use that video camera for something fun like , taping you and the MRS havin some fun

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 4:41 PM

you know ccgh

Do you really think your doing your neighborhood any good by posting video of people working ? NOT . Now I understand the whole not working on weekend thing and all.

You really wana make a difference ? Take your camera and walk around video taping criminals . Take the video's to the cops . Instead you waste your time taping construction workers? Cmon now grow up .Before Lostin in Brooklyn says anything .. I love your site dude but . STFU . Brooklyn has to move forward ,not stand still the way you want .. Thank You

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 5:55 PM

eletricgreek,

I will STFU when folks SDIW (stop doing illegal work). I have nothing against construction workers, architects, developers, land owners, home owners (which I am lucky to be in the ranks of), renters...Brooklynites.

I AM actually video taping "criminals" (if you did your research correctly, you'd know that's what they are...boss man or broom pusher). And we do turn the "criminal activity" over to both the DOB and the Cops. So don't you worry, we'll keep the streets safe...of one type of criminal.

And thanks for the props on what might become a good site, currently a holding page, none the less...

PS. the MRS and I do "have fun..." walking around taping shit-heads breaking the law every other day. Gotta have a hobby, right?

We'll keep taping, you keep watchin'

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 6:17 PM

Oops, my bad! electricgreek, I think you must have meant you "liked" lostinbrookyn's site...should lostinbrooklyn STFU as well?

Agreed, not a bad site, and I do agree with his POV :)

STFU, though? Perhaps we all should...

Mr. B, lock the thread ;)

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 6:23 PM

..." walking around taping shit-heads ""

you call that fun???

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 6:24 PM

correct . i love lost in brooklyn site . but i dony agree with alot of things he has to say

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 6:27 PM

Fun is in the one who's doing the fun, right? I like protecting my community, more than hobby actually, a commitment.

Let's just say we differ on our "idea of fun," though perhaps not disagree on progress. Build all you want. Just do it legally, first. And hopefully secondly, contextual.

And all TypeKeyed up now.

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 6:37 PM

Hey, glad y'all like my site...needs updating, though...too damn busy looking at brownstoner and curbed (in that order).

As for my opinions, to each their own.

Speaking of which, where the heck is crawford or iceberg? I miss you guys!

Posted by: lostinbrooklyn at February 16, 2007 6:40 PM

LOL . you like protecting? Then go out and buy a Batman suit and really protect .

Your more of a guy with too much free time on his hands .

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 7:11 PM

eletricgreek, "ignorance" of what goes on around you must be what's coined "bliss."

I prefer "reality," which hopefully will have sunnier days :)

No free time other than what I commit!

Activism requires volunteerism.

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 8:17 PM

You sound like a great neighbor . nosey body

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 8:37 PM

What, you live next door? Come over for a beverage then...

Posted by: ccgh at February 16, 2007 9:07 PM

LOL . More like 25 miles away

Posted by: eletricgreek at February 16, 2007 9:10 PM

electricgreek - I recommend you join the southsouthslope yahoo group...

I will get a daily load of email from people like ccgh and you can guess the contents...

I am convinced that if they the same people would happen to live on the border of Mexico, they would be the most eager volunteer border guard...

Instead of video camera during the day, they would use nigth visor....

Posted by: incognito at February 17, 2007 2:56 PM

incognito,'
If you'd like to be removed from the SSS yahoo group, that can be arranged. Just sent an e-mail to one of the mods. I'll make sure you are off, don't want to "load you up" any more e-mail than you'd like.

As far as the boarder guard BS, please don't confuse community activism with an obvious bigoted attitude you are displaying...

Posted by: ccgh at February 18, 2007 1:31 PM

I am sure the people along the border call it community activism as well.....

Posted by: incognito at February 18, 2007 10:51 PM

incognito,

Nice. Great that you "outed" someone from the SSS Yahoo group who may have wanted to stay Anon. Real professional and compassionate.

Further lowering my level of respect for anything you have posted here.

Posted by: ccgh at February 19, 2007 1:53 PM

Just as an FYI (for folks reading this thread, or checking back on it after today), I asked Mr. B to "edit out" the SSS Yahoo group user's name from incognito's 10:51 post.

Thank you Mr. B for your editorial skills (and ownership).

For all those who are on the anti-TypeKey slant and like your Anon, I am sure you can appreciate when someone used "bad posting-etiquette" and uses a person's "real name." Tisk-Tisk. Now my post above makes a bit of sense...

And I am not condoning Mr. B going in willy-nilly and editing folks posts for now reason. Being a Mod on several blogs/boards, it is sometimes necessary.

Enough said.
