Where It's At? 1016 on a Greenpoint Street

1016 Lorimer
It took until about 4 o'clock in the afternoon yesterday, but a reader did finally identify the right location of the mystery house. It's 1061 Lorimer Street between Meserole and Norman. Don't get any ideas though: The same family has owned it for more than 35 years.

What a sweet house! If only all of Greenpoint (not to mention Williamsburg)looked like that!

OK, so I was totally off base assuming it was an ex- barn/carriage house. What IS the deal with the open slot above the upper windows?

Any info about the bldgs. history?

That open slot is probably a very tiny unopenable window, designed to allow light into the attic. My 1891 Victorian has one that looks almost identical to this. They kind of remind me of the arrow-slits one would find in medieval fortresses .... regardless, for such a tiny window, it lets in a surprising amount of light.

that house kicks ass. is it narrower than the surrounding houses or is that an optical illusion?

If I were that family I wouldn't part with it either!

You see a lot of apartment buildings in this style, designed on a much grander scale, in Flatbush and also Riverdale.

It was popular in the 20s and 30s.

How cute. What a shame it is next to such two ugly sisters.

Aww, that's my old block. I used to love walking past that house every day. It's kind of a magic wood-elf lookin' place up close.

I know the people who live there. It's a great house inside - there are 2 units, and the upstairs unit is a duplex. It has great light, lots of room. Wish I lived there.

Yes it's so 1920's. The old neighborhoods in L.A. (more specifically eastside Hollywood nabes) have some tudor and brick cottages and apartment buildings like this. With a fantastical approach to the design. The inside details are usually really great in these buildings too. Like in Hollywood I've seen nooks in a wall with stained glass windows you put a light behind, and built-in shelves and drawers, and exposed beamed ceilings, and pictoral tiles around the fireplace, and so on.
