The House That Schumer Built?

9 Prospect Pl
We're going to need some help on this one. We snapped a photo of 9 Prospect Place simply based on its interest as an architectural curiosity. When we went to look it up on Property Shark, we noticed that one of the names that pops up in association with the property in recent years is none other than Charles Schumer. He filed a UCC1 for what was at the time, we believe, a two-unit co-op. Someone else filed a permit to build the rooftop extension back in 2005--and is still plugging away at it. So what's the scoop? Is this where Schumer lives? Was it just an investment? And what do you think of the design? GMAP P*Shark

Yes, Charles Schumer and his family live there. So do alot of other families, some of whom might actually be considered to be in the public's conscience. So, don't get all Gawker on us.

You have the wrong address, he doesn't live at 9 Prospect Place

schumer lives at 9 Prospect Park West, not Prospect Place

a UCC-1 wd be filed to reflect a security interest in coop shares, not in outright ownership of real property (e.g. a house)

anon 10:11, can you explain what a security interest in coop shares is?

I live on Prospect Place and drive pass this house all the time -- it's been there for several years, one of the first modern buildings in the immediate area, and I love it....fits into the architectual context but makes its own modern statement...

Schumer and Weinshall live at 9 Prospect Park West - I was walking by there this morning as Iris was leaving and she growled at my dog...

I talked to the the owner a couple of years ago. Built by a young architect who lives there. It's a great building. Looks like they're adding on top.

damn, get your facts straight brownstoner.

The only fact we stated was that Schumer is listed having filed a UCC1 on the property back in 2003. Still no definitive answer on what his continued interest, in any, in the building is.

Charles Schumer doesn't live there. My friends live there. Yes, one of the couple is an architect. He and his brother and father are doing most of the work. They built the house below too.

I don't know anything about Charles Schumer's involvement.

My guess is error in paperwork - Schumers coop is 9 Prospect Pk West...
Don't know who messed up the filing or whether makes any diffence. I'm not a coop owner.

My friend's brother designed and owns this building. It has a 1 bedroom ground floor rental and two-floor unit above. The current expansion includes adding a sunroom and roof deck, and also expanding horizontally into part of the backyard. He did a great job designing the interior, as well.

Does Schumer have a law firm on the side that could have filed paperwork on behalf of the building?

Posted by: Brownstoner at January 9, 2007 11:53 AM

Prospect Place between Flatbush and 6th has several cool buildings......

Dept of Finance and Buildings often screw up the paperwork and list the WRONG owner for addresses

Posted by: Tom at January 9, 2007 12:28 PM

Friends of mine live there - and none of them is Charles Schumer. It's a lovely little house, the owner designed it.

I am the owner/architect/younger brother mentioned above.

I hate to end the speculation, as i enjoy a good urban myth as much as the next guy, but i wiil set the record straight.

I bought a parking lot in 1999, built a house in 2000, filed for a permit to enlarge it in 2005, and began construction 3 months ago.

I can say with absolute certainty that Chuck Schumer does not now, and has not ever had any connection to this property. He does however, have a very similar address, and we often get his mail (even from his own office). I imagine he is reading my January issue of Dwell at this moment.

Thank you for the nice comments above (annonymous and otherwise).

Hey Jim,

Nice looking house. You might want to drop Chuckie a note telling him his UCC1 and UCC3 are filed with your address in city records. Docs definitely say '9 Prospect Place' with your block and lot numbers.
But your note to him might end up in your mailbox anyway!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 9, 2007 4:02 PM

Jim,

Do you have photos of the inside? On Flckr or the like?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 9, 2007 4:32 PM

Or better yet, how about we all drop Chuck a note at 9PPW telling him not to vote for a troop "surge".

Good work, Jim. Hope this gets you some jobs!

Posted by: west at January 9, 2007 5:20 PM

this has been fairly adequately addressed, but yes, Schumer has lived at 9 PPW since at least the mid-80s.

As a neighbor I must say that it is not
something that is pleasant or interesting to look at, nor does it even give a nod to the brownstone neighborhood that it occupies. But I suppose (to quote a Woodrow Wilson limerick) 'my face I don't mind it, for I am behind it, It's those in front that I jar.'

I also have to comment that many of the neighbors feel that the builder/occupants are deserving of the 'Most Inconsiderate Neighbor Award', mostly for the practices used while completing the construction/renovation (ie. illegally blocking spots for days at a time, (loud)dumpster deliveries before 7:30 a.m., etc.

Wasn't this house featured in the NY Times a few years ago?
