A Handshake Seals the Broken Angel Deal

wall
We couldn't resist running this photo from Chris Wood's Flickr page showing Shahn Andersen and the Woods sealing the Broken Angel deal last weekend. Shahn clearly dressed up for the occasion! In related news, we have a tentative agreement to host the Broken Angel reno blog here on Brownstoner. How much will that rock!

Which one is Andersen? In the middle?

Posted by: mentch at January 17, 2007 9:02 AM

Oh my god, could Chris have used a worse picture of me? Ack. LOL.

Posted by: Shahn Andersen at January 17, 2007 9:25 AM

Now it's confirmed, Shahn is NOT famous tattoo artist..

congratulations, i hope this goes well. can't wait to hear more about the arts space in the adjacent lot.

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at January 17, 2007 9:41 AM

If you google Shahn Andersen, that's mostly what pops up, information about some big hairy tatoo artist in Minnesota.

a friend of mine plays in a band called "the Woods" so the statement "Shahn Anderson and the Woods" makes me feel good. also this photo in a record store means that i feel pretty good. what's the deal with the record store though, really?? i like it when a deal goes down in a record store! ok, maybe it's a dvd rental place but it looks like a record store so i'm gonna pretend it is. also everyone has a genuine smile on faces! I LIKE IT! WTG!!!!!!!

Posted by: Rider at January 17, 2007 9:46 AM

Maybe Shahn Andersen should get a tattoo of Broken Angel done by Shahn Anderson.

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 9:48 AM

Which video store is that? Looks like the one on PPW x 16.

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 10:02 AM

Why does everyone care so much about this Broken Angel building again?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 10:07 AM

What about the Massey Knakal Deal?
I thought they had an exclusive on this one, isn't Brownstoner?
Did Massey was involved and did they get them commission?
maybe they'll get a discount on the condo?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 10:07 AM

The site should make a great studio space for other artists-while my househunting will be over by the time the residental units are ready, I'll be following the story just to see if it's remotely possible to find workspace there, someday.

Congrats to all, I hope this works out for everyone!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 10:15 AM

shahn, you look adorable. I hope you get to keep that smile through the whole process.

Posted by: glarph at January 17, 2007 11:02 AM

Good for you Shahn. Since you're in such a good mood, how about showing us what you've done with your Halloween house!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 11:52 AM

How old is Shahn? 13?

Posted by: anon at January 17, 2007 11:58 AM

I'd love to blog about my house renovation again, but my significant other has put the kibbosh on that for now. There will be a Broken Angel renoblog though.

Posted by: Shahn Andersen at January 17, 2007 12:07 PM

Shahn is in his early 30's.

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 2:20 PM

party on dude!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 3:39 PM

Shaun = Stifler

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 3:39 PM

yo shahn, don't mess up my favorite block in all of brooklyn. Do it right kid...

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 3:44 PM

Does he look a little like Perez Hilton?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 3:59 PM

Yo, Shahn, you never mentioned that you're just a kid! How do you have the funds to be a real estate developer?!?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 4:54 PM

32 is just a kid?

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 5:08 PM

No but you are a kid when you still wear sweatpants, humorous T-Shirts and an earing to a multi-million dollar real estate meeting/closing

Posted by: anon at January 17, 2007 5:10 PM

He doesn't look 32. More like 22. Anyway, more power to you, Shahn!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 17, 2007 5:27 PM

I don't have an earing, and I won't be 32 until March. Where does this information come from? Aren't we supposed to be talking about Broken Angel and not me? I'm just the catalyst in this equation.

Posted by: Shahn Andersen at January 17, 2007 5:44 PM

You're more the swindler in this equation.

Posted by: anon at January 17, 2007 6:05 PM

Seriously, what experience do you have developing a piece of property this large and important? Where are your contractors, funding, architects coming from? What knowledge do you have of zoning, building codes and the like? What are the Woods getting? Are you splitting the costs and the funds? Are they getting money up front for allowing you to develop this property?

Posted by: HUH? at January 17, 2007 6:49 PM

So I should have let Broken Angel get demolished Anon 6:05? Why didn't you step in and help the Woods when the DOB was about to tear their building down? Is doing something mutually beneficial a swindle?

This is my 12th rehabilitation project HUH! The Woods will end up with a good deal more of the financial proceeds than I get, and we will both benefit from the building being saved. If you had offered to bring your construction resources to the table, and then given 100% of the financial proceeds to the Woods, I'm sure they would have taken you up on it. You didn't choose to do that, and I am neither saint nor swindler for putting my time and resources on the line to make sure the project gets done right.

Posted by: Shahn Andersen at January 17, 2007 7:17 PM

hear, hear. you guys are just jealous because you hadn't accomplished half of what he has when you were 32...
I know his properties and he's been working hard for a long time and is a committed member of his community as well.

Posted by: miss priss at January 17, 2007 8:43 PM

Good luck Shahn!

Of course we're all jealous. We're sitting at our computers, jerking around, and you're making big buck real estate deals with crazy old codgers at Blockbuster in the hood.

As my grampa said, "Larry, there are followers and there are leaders. It's up to you." Most of us are followers. You're obviously a leader.

Don't sweat guys like HUH? He's an uptight finance nerd who spends his days hunched at his desk in midtown, counting his sheckles and scratching his ass.

Look'n forward to the blog. . .

Posted by: Dollar Store Larry at January 17, 2007 10:59 PM

Did you close in a video store? I like your shirt!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 18, 2007 7:23 AM

Go for it Shahn. You're only 13 I mean 32 once big guy. Jealous, not really. I actually think it is definitely part crazy to actually do this. Afterall 32... you've been around a loooooong time. This is the time to do all things crazy.

Posted by: anon at January 18, 2007 7:57 AM

The closing was in Blockbuster because it is the sequel to David Chapelle's sequel documentary another White guy takes the broken angel for a ride.

Posted by: anon at January 18, 2007 7:58 AM

I don't think it's a crazy idea to develop Broken Angel into condos. The building has some notoriety and it's been made famous by the David Chapelle movie. It's a de-facto landmark (even if it doesn't have that designation legally). As such, it has some sort of provenance. If the market should turn downwards these condos would potentially sell quicker than many of those coming online because it's unique and quirky and famous.
Good luck Shahn and the Woods!
Don't rule out the idea of including a lounge, bar or cafe on the ground floor and keeping some of the units as rentals (as in a condo-hotel or timeshare).

Posted by: Anonymous at January 18, 2007 12:21 PM

yay hotel idea! bar cool too..

Posted by: Anonymous at January 18, 2007 1:15 PM

wait who was the first white guy to take broken angel for a ride?

i hope these negative commenters are just baptizing Shahn by fire, making sure he's up to the challenge. i can't really see how any armchair developer would actually get hot under the collar over this. unless they were hoping for BA to get razed altogether.

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at January 18, 2007 3:30 PM

Boy he's cute. I always thought he was some old yucky guy. Congrats hottie.

Posted by: Anonymous at January 18, 2007 10:47 PM

hey, isn't that the keyboardist from the Dust Up?
-=Anon...

Posted by: anon at January 19, 2007 2:15 PM

shahn is a slum lord. i live in one of his buildings and i haven't had a hot shower in over three months. stupid rich kid.

Posted by: whatever. at January 19, 2007 9:57 PM

Yeah, it's easy to slam someone anonymously on a blog with no evidence to back it up. If you had a real problem, you'd call HPD and report it to the city, not post it on a blog. Duh. Either you're stupid or you are lying.

Posted by: Superintendent at January 21, 2007 8:57 PM

Leave Shahn alone at least he gets up and does something. Unlike many on this website. Rock on Hottie!

Posted by: Anonymous at January 22, 2007 10:03 AM

Get Up! Get Up! Get Up!
