Smoke Joint Revisited
Y'all had lots to say about The Smoke Joint when we first discussed it here, and Time Out gave it some love in last week's issue, so armed with these recs we decided to sample the wares at the Fort Greene barbecue spot on Friday night and discovered a few pleasing changes. Jay from ClintonHillBlog happened to be sitting at the table next to us, and he mentioned that one of the sauces had gotten distinctly hotter since he reviewed the place last month. Turns out the owners (one of whom was serving tables himself and chatting amiably with customers) recently rejiggered the recipe after extensive taste-tests; to us the new version--vinegary in a way that recalls North Carolina sauces, with a truly tongue-tingling finish--was perfect.
It seemed that the service had improved in the past month, too; our orders were complete and on time, even though it was a crowded Friday night (definitely too crowded for a long, lingering meal, it's true). Best of all, we learned that the Joint will be serving lunch and doing delivery all over Fort Greene "very soon" (right now staff are being trained in the art of delivery service), so at least folks in the neighborhood will be able to avoid the ever-growing crowds.
If you're about to become part of those crowds, we say try the tender yet toothsome baby back ribs, addictive spice-rubbed fries, and refreshingly mayo-free slaw. The "smoky greens" tasted wholesome and garlicky but didn't live up to their name, while the hacked pork was a little mushy and bland. We'd been hoping for a side of cornbread or hush puppies and were a little disappointed not to find any on the menu, but the crunchy mini corn muffins that come with the brisket are the perfect marriage of those two carb options.
The Smoke Joint, 87 South Elliott Pl (at Fulton St.), Fort Greene, (718)797-1011. Tue–Sun 5–10pm.

I wanted to like Smoke Joint, but it has nothing on Daisy May's or Dinosaur Barbecue, or, say, real Southern barbecue but that's several states away. Both the pork and the beef ribs were overcooked and not appropriately slow-cooked, the mac and cheese was a downgrade from Kraft. SJ is decent food, but it's not great barbecue. (The chicken wings, however, are worth the trip.)
