Salvager of the Week: Portland Architectural Salvage
Though not as far away as this salvage place, Portland Architectural Salvage in Maine may not be the most practical place for us New Yorkers to buy heavy bathtubs and doors from. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't check out their inventory or easier-to-ship items like hardware and lighting. They've got lots of different milk glass covers (left) and we thought this art deco chandelier with slipper shades looked interesting for $200. Anyone ever bought anything from this place?

The deco chandelier with slipper shades is priced very low, but it looks to me like it's been bastardized with shades from bathroom fixtures or desk lamps. All other American chandeliers of that type that I've seen have shades more like the amber ones in the next listing on the PAS site and those go for $125 EACH.

mr. b: don't know if you were aware, but this is portland, maine...so it is on the east coast and really only a 4 hour drive or so from the city.

I completely missed that it's in ME rather than OR. However, when I went back to the site I noticed that the $125 amber "slipper" shade is actually for a desk lamp. Note that it has a lip at the END for attaching it to the fixture. AFAIK real slipper shades have lips on the side (and, therefore SLIP into the fittings on the light fixture). Unfortunately, they were usually made to fit specific fixture designs, so finding replacements isn't easy.

Sorry to be a stickler, anon 10:45, but a 4 hour drive will get you to Boston, then it's another two hours to Portland, ME. Just in case anybody was planning a trip there anytime soon.

i made the drive to portland from the city just 3 weeks ago in 4 hrs 15 mins. averaging about 75 mi/hr...sorry.
