The Sweetest Butcher in Brooklyn

7jimmy.jpg
We must not have too many readers down in Coney Island because when we asked you guys to nominate your favorite butchers a couple of weeks ago, nobody mentioned Major Prime Meats (1516 Mermaid Avenue), which has been in business for 75 years. Heather Tenzer from Brooklyn Independent TV interviewed the shop's endearing current owner, Jimmy Prince, who is just a touch younger than the market. "I'm gonna be 75 in another month and I feel like 25," Jimmy says. "Every day is an enjoyable event." He also talks about his starting salary of $35 per week in 1949 (and how it was quickly raised to $40 on account of his enthusiasm), giving special treatment to senior citizens, and how his stock of meats has changed over the years to accomodate his changing neighborhood. You'll need Windows Media Player to view the segment, and you can check it out by clicking the link below.
