Busted Down on Huron Street

development
According our main man justiNYC, this project at 137 Huron Street in the northern reaches of Greenpoint was slapped with a Stop Work Order yesterday for failure to safeguard the public. "I found it interesting that the builders we're concerned with the safety of the public," notes Justin, "considering the site sits right beside the Public Bath." Interesting indeed. Especially since the DOB website doesn't list any permits currently out on this address. By the way, what's the story with the public bath? GMAP

I am almost sure it the site of the development, http://www.meltzermandl.com/projects/OnTheBoard/greenhuron.htm

It's interesting though, that there is a stop order before any permits are issued to begin the work.

The public baths were built for the dock workers at the turn of the century. Greenpoint had a very significant shipping industry. The Monitor was built in Greenpoint.

I belive that building is now landmarked and is used by an artist/furniture maker.

This is on my street and the development which continues onto Green backs up to my current building. This is the first I have seen of the proposal and my first reaction is one of fear - its horribly inappropriate for the context. What is this, Jersey City??
The site now under demo is really unsafe and not even properly secured - the construction fence is always swinging wide open.

I took some photos of the public bath building last year:

I am glad to hear it is landmarked. I would love to get inside this building.

The ground floor of 139 Huron is the workshop of a guilder who owns the building and has been there some 30 odd years. The top floor as been converted into a giant artist studio and 'living space'.... I am so fortunate to call it home.
