Mad Props for Brooklyn Pies

Time Out's epic search for NYC's ten tastiest pizzas turned up three Brooklyn-baked pies, including the (somewhat unsurprising) number-one choice: DiFara's. And a devotee of the Midwood joint--Carroll Gardens native Mark Iacono, who crafts DiFara's-style pies at newly-opened Lucali--garnered a lovely review in yesterday's Times. All this critical attention to Brooklyn pies is reassuring in the wake of Domino's releasing its "Brooklyn-style" pizza, but that attention is also sure to make the already-packed Lucali impossibly crowded, as Slice NY notes. And while we're on the subject, no reviewer ever seems to mention the precise time, in hours (at least two) that it already takes to get a pie at DiFara's.
At the risk of driving droves of people there, what's your fave Brooklyn pizza place? Any opinions on the exclusion of Grimaldi's from the top ten? And DiFara's is certainly delicious, but how long would you wait for a pie (or any foodstuff, for that matter)?

Graziella's on Vanderbilt is great, but the pies are small.

Yep Graziella's rocks.

There's a little place out in Bay Ridge that has the best pizza I've eaten in all of NYC so far. Sadly, I never bothered to note the name of it in the year I lived out there! It was on 3rd Avenue on the West side of the street, somewhere around 93rd or 92nd Street. They were all local Italian Bay Ridge natives working in there. There's nothing hip about this place - white walls, formica tables and booths, flourescent lights. But amazing pizza.

Got to say I second your skepticism about DiFara's pizza. Since he uses great ingredients and obviously knows what he is doing the pizza is good. However, I recently had an experience there that will keep me from ever going anywhere near the place ever again. In addition to waiting over two hours on line, once we got a pizza, which was not the one we ordered, the pizza was burnt and really was not that tasty. It seems that Mr. Difara and the apparently uneven stove he uses to cook his one pie per 20 mins are well past their prime. To get a pizza you have to fight for his attention and hope that his mind does not wonder before he starts making your food. The man is a true artist but is far from being a business man. Any charm to the shop is certainly lost after standing around for more than an hour and people should take a que from the majority of the people on the line who decide to give up well before they get a pie. I wish I did.

I think that place is run by the Royal Crown Bakery guys, as is Piazza Mercato the butcher/Italian grocery that's right there too. GREAT FOOD!

Anthony's 14th/7th ave. Park Slope... yummy

I second the Fascati vote (also great chicken and meatball parm heros); there's another goodie on 3rd Ave and Carroll St in Gowanus -- I don't know their name, but I seem to remember that they moved there from Manhattan.

Some buddies and I did a little bike ride called Tour De Slice where we rode from pizzeria to pizzeria. It was a great leisurely ride.

DiFara's is an adventure but worth the wait. Also I really like Amorina on Vanderbilt and go way out of my way to go there. The ingredients are extremely fresh and high quality and the specials are almost always very interesting. I like the Tricolore and also the pizza with fennel, oranges and mint. Much better than Franny's which gets so much inexplicable press.

They left out Grimaldi's? That's inexcusable. As for DiFaro, I am very glad we went there...once. It was sort of a spiritual experience, very intimate--an artisan making something just...for...me. But I don't think I'd have the stamina to do the wait again. As for distant competitors in the realm of the Ordinary Neighborhood Slice, we like San Remo on Cortelyou Road between Marlborough and Rugby (it was also where Denzel stopped in during shooting of 'Malcolm X' nearby), and in Windsor Terrace we prefer the bare-bones Sabella (near the post office, opposite the Bagel place) to the more blubbery slices at the place up on the corner of Prospect Avenue. Then there's the place on Prospect Park SW near the ugly Uncle Louie G corner; nice pies if you avoid the silly toppings like lasagna and fried chicken cutlet. (What's up with that, anyway?)

I haven't been to DiFara's, but my vote is for Lucali's. It's way better than Lombardi's or Grimaldi's! My mouth waters when I think about it...mmmmmm....

What's the name of the place on Union, on the other side of the BQE, southside, middle of the block? Best sauce on any slice I've ever had. I like the crust at Sam's. Best overall though is Totonno’s. Had a pie there last week and it was the best meal of the year, so far. (And Grimaldi's is way over-rated.)

The place on Union is called like House of Pizza or something like that. Good pies.

Another vote for fascatti's here...
Posted by: Anonymous at December 4, 2006 9:09 PM
This place reviewed is great...long wait though and too many F&*#ing kids and strollers! Probably better to go a little later awhen they're asleep.
Grimaldi's is so overrated it's unbeleiveable it's recommended as much as it is....mediocre at best.

Sam's on court is my favorite. You can also get a pie in 15 minutes instead of an hour or two. Try the garlic and ricotta pie too. For a slice id vote Fascati.
