Grenier Really Is Going Green
It turns out that HBO star Adrian Grenier is taking this whole green renovation thing pretty seriously. In addition to the recycled denim he's using for insulation, he's just installed a row of photovoltaic panels on the roof that runs the entire length of the house. Pretty neat. Anyone know what the price tag on these things is?

I can't believe Landmarks let him put that on his house.

Will you see then panels from the street when this is done. I looks like you do in the photo, but maybe they are not in their final position?

You can get New York State to pay for 40% - 70% of the cost of solar electricity for your home through the NYSERDA program. You get more money if your panels face due south, which these appear to do.

Anon 10:58- I agree.
How dare he besmirch the historic roofline of his house with such an ugly technology, even if it does save money, reduce petroleum energy dependance, lower greenhouse gases, improve air quality, and in general slow down and maybe help reverse the egregious environmental damage that humans have done in the past 100 years. Adrian has some nerve.

I think anon 10:58 was talking more about what Landmarks does and doesn't allow a homeowner to to do their house.

I think that was anon 10.58's point too. Usually landmarks requires roof decks and other roof installations not be visible from the street. This pic looks like it might be, or maybe it is taken from the adjacent lot/driveway...

Anyone with experiences to share on PV systems in NYC? I was considering one for my house, but it ain't a cheap setup.

To Anon 11:47: Shut up, Adrian.

i'm not sure this is a landmarked block. this is grand ave almost at putnam/fulton, parts of this block are in good shape, others not so good.
he's done a great job at fixing up a house in bad need of a rennovatino.

The Clinton Hill Historic District extends down Grand Avenue to include number 446. Buildings after that are not landmarked. This house is a couple of houses inside the landmarked distric.

ooh, you caught him!! adrian grenier has countless hours in between schtooping supermodels and making movies to log onto Brownstoner and pimp himself to a dozen or two real estate-nerds!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at November 14, 2006 3:32 PM
"Schtooping" Would that be something sexual otherwise performed on the front steps of a brownstone?
Posted by: PPser at November 14, 2006 4:05 PM
That's hilarious. Photobloggers of Brooklyn take note: you might want to wander by Adrian Grenier's new house, apparently he's busy doing inappropriate things to supermodels out front...

you are all jealous nerds.

Yes, Adrian, we are. :)

Hey, AG here, and I do NOT approve any prior messages on this post. Sorry if you don't like the look of my renovation, but energy independence is too important to me to worry about whether this meets your aesthetic approval. You should all think hard about how you impact the environment yourselves before you judge me.
Posted by: Anonymous at November 14, 2006 6:08 PM
It's ok, AG, you yourself more than make up for any imagined aesthetic sins your green reno may have committed. Keep up the good looks. I mean work.

Yet Vinnie and the boys continue to roll in that clunking SUV...

I hope that you guys are all joking. You should all aspire to be green.

They are all Green - with envy

Sadly pretty in this society helps you get more money to renovate to your heart's content. Not true for the rest of us average-looking folk.

I just hope he isn't going to flip. I'd like to think that he actually cares and that this isn't some lame celebrity poser fantasy. The rest of us poor slobs are just waiting for some "movie star" to show us how things are supposed to done.

That photo was prior to final installation. The system has been since lowered in pitch to lessen visual impact, therefore it's not a landmark issue. I think it's a great project, but maybe I'm bias since we installed it. As for costs, threre are substantial rebates and tax credits that make solar energy economically viable for almost anyone with a roof.

I like this project. It is beautiful. Good job, AG!
