An ass sometimes is a delight to look at, but not this one, lol.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 11:10 AM

gmap link shows address at 70 Washington. somehow don't think that is right.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 11:15 AM

Is this subsidized housing? It looks about the same caliber.

Posted by: Anon at October 4, 2006 11:23 AM

If they're selling cheap and offer lots of space, what's the big deal?

A neighborhood is made up of people, not just old brownstones.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 11:28 AM

Whoops. It's Hart and Marcy.

Posted by: brownstoner at October 4, 2006 11:28 AM

I think they are quite unattractive, but one of the most troubling things is that no room was left (from what I can tell) for any sort of garden or trees in the front. A decent garden could do wonders, along with trees lining the sidewalk, for these houses. The same goes for pretty much any development.

Posted by: lp at October 4, 2006 11:31 AM

just think in a 100 years folks will be fighting to purchase these historic landmarks..full of detail and so well constructed for their time

Posted by: anon at October 4, 2006 11:50 AM

doubt it, no details and I'd venture to guess not built to last.

Posted by: lp at October 4, 2006 12:01 PM

I don't understand the headline.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 12:20 PM

Could be in New York, could be in Des Moines...

YOU decide.....

hell, it looks like government housing.

Posted by: jbjb at October 4, 2006 12:25 PM

i wonder how deep these houses are, bet they're like 20 feet. i've seen lots of '3-family ' new construction that's like 500 sq feet per floor. guess they need the space in back for off-street parking. i wonder how much the parking requirements are affecting these design decisions.

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at October 4, 2006 12:37 PM

right on, jbjb. off-base housing for (lower-ranking) commissioned officers. (sorry, as awful as these are, still nicer than non-coms would get.)

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 12:37 PM

I grew up in des Moines, and this sir, is not a representation of Des Moines!

There would be a chunk of grass outside. And 20 more units identical to this, in a grid. With lots of parking. And no exterior stairs. It gets cold in Iowa!

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 12:39 PM

I can attest that Columbus, Ohio is full of these things. Complete with ugly gray carpeting throughout.

Fedder-Fest

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 1:53 PM

Attractive? Questionable. But what's this thing with white iron railings all of a sudden. Wouldn't black iron railings look a little more in keeping with brick? Or is white iron cheaper than black. It puzzles me every time I see white iron anywhere...even on b'stones. Looks so out of place.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 2:51 PM

you have to paint the iron in any event. My guess is the cheapest windows and doors came in white aluminum or vinal (sp?), so they painted the railing white to match. I agree. Black would look better for the whole lot, doors, window frames and railings.

Posted by: lp at October 4, 2006 2:58 PM

I have been waiting for 3 hours and 45 minutes and nobody has explained the headline to me.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 4:17 PM

i think mr b thought that "a piece of ass" could stand in for "a piece of shit". mr b is probably too civilized to know that "ass", while related to "shit" (being the provenance of), has an entirely different meaning here. "a piece of ass" is actually used to refer to a derriere that one (albeit vulgarly) approves of, such as "sharon stone, now that's a nice piece of ass". alternately, it can be used to refer to "getting it on" with someone, as in "i'd like to get me a piece of that ass".

mr b?

Posted by: sylvia at October 4, 2006 4:30 PM

Sharon Stone is your example for a 'piece of a$$'??
Glad to see Brownstones arent the only historical relics you can appreciate

Posted by: Anon at October 4, 2006 4:56 PM

I think it's time for Mr. B. to farkify his site, but with a brownstoner twist. Anytime someone types "shit" it would show up as "Scarano" as in "That new Fedders building is a huge piece of Scarano." "Fuck" would come out as "Boymelgreen" as in "Who gives a flying Boymelgreen what mothers in Park Slope think?" And any entry with the words "bubble" and "burst" would be entirely rewritten as "I like high school boys."

Posted by: Amy at October 4, 2006 5:48 PM

It was a tongue-in-cheek play on the term "piece of ass" commonly used to describe someone with a hot bod; in this case, we were using the word "ass" a little more derogatively, more like a "piece of S---".

Posted by: brownstoner at October 4, 2006 6:12 PM

I thought the headline was sarcastic. Like, "THERE is a piece of ass (wink, wink)", as he points out something that clearly isn't.

These are two family houses not three and I dont think that they are so bad. The biggest criticism I see above is the color of the railing. What about the big windows and the balcony on the third floor. These are actually nice big houses. Youre picking on the wrong builder.

1. Used as an insult or comment about someone of a feature on someone ex someone who:
is dumb
weird
sexy
attractive
hott
has a nice booty
is diferent
strange
acting stupid
being silly
dressed like a ho
well put together
looking really hott
being retarded

"omigod sara u piece of ass"
In this case it could mean jst about anything depending on the situation.
"ow ow manda u sexy peice of ass get over here"
In this case manda is a hott sexy biotch wiht a nice booty
"omigod sally u frekaing peice of ass"
In this case sally is a lazy ass fatso who is annoying as hell and really retarded

Posted by: Anonymous at October 4, 2006 9:31 PM

Piece of ass?! Brad Pitt, Derek Jeter, A-Rod, my husband

Posted by: anon at October 4, 2006 9:57 PM

"The biggest criticism I see above is the color of the railing. These are actually nice big houses. Youre picking on the wrong builder."

Well another person also pointed out the builder/developer built from edge to edge of the property. There's a condo building we looked at in South Slope (with way better architecture than this) with ground floor units they can't give away much less sell, who also built to the edge of the property. The residents on the ground floors would look out at people walking by on the sidewalk mere inches away. Think of the noise as you're trying to sleep and someone passes, talking, literally one foot from your window. Stupid.

Building from property line to property line shows contempt for your buyers: you want to offer them as little as possible to make as much moolah as possible. Eliminating one unit might result in enough space for a little landscaping; building something smaller or with fewer units might be more in proportion to the realities of the lot, and ultimately provide a better and more usable living space for the future owners, but then you couldn't squeeze every penny out of some poor shmo desperate for housing.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 5, 2006 9:16 AM

Also, enough of the dumbass posts that "In 100 years ago, people will be desperate to live in these landmarks" baloney. Given a choice between quality attractive housing and crap, people with enough money will always choose quality and attractveness. These are the absentee-landlord, boarding house, crack dens of the future--until they fall down or are condemned well before that 100-year mark is met.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 5, 2006 9:19 AM

These are 3 family houses, look at the attractive (not) utility meters.

Anon 9:19 is so right, as is 9:16. These builders just don't get it. Granted, these are a bit better than the ones featured last week, at least they have better light and windows. Too bad they couldn't figure out a better way to put the stairs in, and landscaping would certainly make a light year's worth of difference in the overall look. How much would a couple of trees or shrubs cost? Or at least a landscaped area with just some dirt for plantings?

Sigh, another wasted opportunity. Too bad.

One other comment on building to the property line. The steps of the homes stop at the sidewalk, which will be an invitation for folks walking by to stop and sit on your stairs. A fence or gate with a little grass alieviates this problem, separates the home from the public areas and clearly deliniates that this is private property.

Posted by: Oh Lord! at October 5, 2006 10:22 AM

I was under the impression street trees, every 25' or so were mandatory now-a-days? No?

And back yards? Even under R6 they need to leave 30'.

WTF?
