Sixth Avenue House Break

demo
A reader sent us this photo of a house on 6th Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets being torn down last month week. She thinks the demolition was ordered by the city but isn't sure. We wouldn't be surprised since it has been an eyesore and safety hazard for some time. In fact, according to DOB, it was classified as an "unsafe building" back in 1994 and has racked up another eight violations in the meantime. Does anyone know what the story is? GMAP P*Shark BIS

Isn't that the place with some guy's will that had some stipulation that it couldnt be sold because of some bad blood between him and some long-dead neighbor and he didn't want the neighbor to get his hands on it...

Thank god. That was the ugliest hulk in the whole neighborhood!

Actually, the demolition began this week and is still ongoing.

Finally! I live around the corner on 11th street. There was a tree in front of this house that fell onto a car sometime last month, as well.

I live nearby too, and I've always avoided walking under the dangerous-looking scaffolding that has been out front since I moved here 5 years ago. However, it is cool to see the burned out imploded inside! You can't see it in this pic, but there are stairs to the 3rd floor just magically hanging on.

No idea - but can I have that mantle piece in the middle?

There are three "like" wood frame buildings in a row. The two end ones were renovated (not very well IMO) some time ago. The middle one, the wreck, has been that way for more than 15 years.

There's another abandoned, boarded up house on 2nd or 3rd street between 6th and 7th closer to 7th. And of course the building right on 7th avenue at 2nd street. I think I have my corners right. And there's a boarded up brownstone on Berkeley between 5th and 6th. Anyway, I always think it must be a situation like kowgurl described, a family feuding over it or something. Sad when that happens. Because meanwhile the house just sits there and rots.

How do the adjacent houses get impacted by this tear down. Can't be good for them structurally.

My friend lives next door to the wreck on 2nd Street, near 7th... It wasn't all boarded up when she bought her place. What a nightmare.

sure it was unsafe. It almost killed me!

I was at a friend's party back in 2002 - in a building connected to this one. I was having a cigarette on the roof of and I drunkenly wandered onto the roof of the blighted building above. I mistakenly assumed that the buildings in park slope were of a certain structural integry - and fell through the roof.

There was a large hole in the roof covered up by a piece of rotten particle board.

I fell all the way through the building (there were no floors, or perhaps large holes in the floors), and landed in the basement, in a pile of rubble. Something broke my fall fortunately - a floating staircase - and owing to fortune and drunken flexibility, I came out mostly uninjured.

The fire dept. pulled me out of the basement and I spent the weekend in Brooklyn Memorial under observation.

Good times .... I'm actually kind of sad to see this building go.

Ahhh yes, the old wreck on 6th ave. i used to live 2 doors down and i have fond memories of that place, especially when "anonymous" (above) fell through the roof! Having firemen race through your party at 3am provides great entertainment all around.

Goodbye old wreck! you gave the block character.

I believe "anonymous's" words when he emerged from the building leaning on a firefighter were: "I'm indestructable!"

The "stairs to the 3rd floor just magically hanging on" that Jemstone alludes to are probably what broke my fall and saved my life ...

That's so funny!
