Best of Brooklyn: Sushi

27sushi.jpg
We've been craving sushi for days, but we're thinking about straying from our go-to spots. Can anybody weigh in on the best sushi restaurant in Brooklyn? The succulent pieces depicted above come from the open kitchen of Blue Ribbon Sushi (278 5th Avenue between 1st Street and Garfield Place in Park Slope), which is definitely a candidate. For fun, inventive rolls and a relaxed atmosphere, we also love Cube 63 (234 Court Street at Baltic in Cobble Hill). Cube's volacano roll (crab and shrimp in a spicy sauce) always has us coming back for more, and they occasionally infuse their drinking water with cucumbers and limes — a perfectly refreshing complement.

Don't think it would qualify as the best, but Sushi D on Dekalb is a pretty reliable take-out standby.

Taro on Dean St near Flatbush is the best! The sushi is the freshest I've had by far anywhere in Brooklyn and the prices very reasonable. Cute little place too, but can get a little cramped. Sure, Blue Ribbon is great if you're willing to blow a ton of cash but Taro is supberb for the everyday craving.

Ki Sushi (I think that's what it's called), on Smith between Bergen and Wycoff. Very classy spot, impeccable service, fresh, terrific sushi- and VERY reasonably priced.

I highly recommend Gen restaurant at 659 Washington Avenue at St. Mark's Avenue in Prospect Heights. Excellent and creative rolls and great cooked food as well. Japanese-owned and operated and very friendly.

These tips all look helpful--can those vouching for ki and kotobuki compare to osaka on court, which, in my opinion, is roughly as good as it gets?

Blue Ribbon is among the best i've ever had. If these other places compare... i'll have to give them a try!

Iron Chef on Clark st in Brooklyn Heights is the most reliable in that area.

Another vote for Iron Chef

Ate at Taro last night. Very fresh and well prepared. Definitley comparable to Blue Ribbon at half the price though I would have to give Blue Ribbon the vote on atmosphere, decor, and non-sushi menu items.

That said, Taro did make a few errors on our order. I have an extreme allergy to crab and some other shellfish. I ordered Sushi deluxe and specifically told the waitress about my allergy yet when I plate arrived there was a giant piece of crab sushi right in the middle. Luckily my wife was able to trade me a piece gobble it up no problem. My wife also ordered a piece of salmon roe and she got a piece of salmon instead. She pointed it out to the waitress who brought her yet another piece of salmon. And finally, we ordered a bowl of Udon for our daughter before we placed our sushi orders and it didn't come until we had nearly finished eating our sushi (while trying to keep our daughter happy with bits of rice).

Those problems aside I would definitely go to Taro again.

taro is great, and i really like yamato as well, in park slope on 7th ave and garfield. there's also a pretty good sushi place on flatbush, i think between park pl and sterling.

I personally love Nana on 5th ave in park slope and order from there almost twise a week. Their dragon roll is my favorite of all time. They have a ton of other good things on the menu (orange chicken to die for) and great drinks. But definitely not a traditional sushi place.

Posted by: Kris at September 27, 2006 2:43 PM

I like Miso in dumbo. Really fresh and nice staff. Taro is great too.

I second the recommendation for Restaurant Gen on Washington Ave in Prospect Heights. It's terrific, especially the short ribs and pork belly appetizers. Super-creative and fresh rolls and sushi. And not only Japanese-run, but Japanese Rasta-run.

I also like Geido on Flatbush.

Nouvelle on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge has been great every time I've been there. Their specials are always delicious.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Osaka on Court street. It's superb. their red river roll is amazing.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 27, 2006 6:00 PM

The chirashi at Geido on Flatbush is outstanding and cheap. Great take-out.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 27, 2006 6:41 PM

Sakura on 5th Ave. in Park Slope is consistently outstanding, one of the best in NYC. A gem, a real sleeper.

Taku on Smith Street is great too, though they don't have a full sushi menu, just sashimi specials.

Another vote for Sushi D. I think it's the best in Ft. Greene. I love that the rice is always still warm, even when I order delivery.

Posted by: So Portland at September 27, 2006 7:03 PM

Im dreading the day when people find out that Sakura is one of the best Sushi joints in all of NYC. It's going to be packed

Posted by: me at September 27, 2006 7:14 PM

I have to say that Ki Sushi is the best. Osaka on Court is good, but Ki is I am pretty sure the most amazing sushi that I have ever had. This includes all the west coast sushi, which usually trumps the east coast. Taro is also good for freshness and price, but there specialty roll are not that great, especially their dragon roll.

Ki Sushi is very fresh, has original rolls (I strongly recommend the Spicy Girl roll), a GREAT lunch special, atmosphere is perfect, and the prices are amazing.

Yum.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Kiku yet. both locations in the slope are good (7th ave is take-out only). I will have to try Sakura.

I was very disappointed with Blue Ribbon Sushi. The food was good, but not close to being better then a trusted local sushi joint. The service was awful (inattentive and not knowledgable). The crowd seemed like they just wanted to spend money and get bento boxes, not explore the cuisine.

I used to love Osaka, but I feel the quality has been going down. I ate there once recently and got sick (!), and so am staying away from now on.

Cube63 is a nice addition to the neighborhood - I love their volcano roll. Ki on Smith is also excellent. The Ki roll and Dynamite roll are both fantastic.

I'd not heard about Kotobuki, I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

As a native Japanese and BK resident for 5 years, I vote for Iron Chef on Clark St.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 28, 2006 10:54 AM

Ki Sushi is just not as good as Cube 63, Osaka, Taro Sushi, Blue Ribbon, or Yamato. It's mediocre in every way, and I don't understand why people keep recommending it. Are you being paid?

Posted by: anon at September 28, 2006 11:07 AM

Geido is super quality at a decent price.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 28, 2006 11:13 AM

Blue Ribbon was great aleit pricey - of course everyone knows this. Under the radar is Miso in Dumbo. One of the few places i can tolerate and actually really enjoy all those white (or non tuna and salmon) fish.

Posted by: bc at September 28, 2006 12:13 PM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Geido on Flatbush (at 7th Avenue) in the Slope -- my all-time favorite sushi!

Posted by: Jeanne at September 28, 2006 12:29 PM

nana on 5th ave is fabulous! plus their non-sushi menu is equally delish, so it's the perfect place to go for all things pan-asian, both raw and cooked.

Posted by: carolyn at September 28, 2006 12:31 PM

Yamoto on 7th ave. in park slope is terrific...

Posted by: joanne at September 28, 2006 7:41 PM

Another vote for Iron Chef on Clark St. near Henry St.!

Posted by: Jeff'y at September 30, 2006 12:21 PM

Nepon Sushi on 5th and St. Mark's (I think) is the best sushi I've found in the Slope. Blue Ribbon has great food, but it's overpriced. Nepon's fish is spectacular, and it has normal sushi joint prices. Their menu is pretty straightforward, but their special rolls are very inventive and well-made, and all the sushi and sashimi I've had there have been unreal.

It's new and still relatively undiscovered, but if it keeps up the quality, that will soon change.

I'll join in the chorus for Gen on Washington ave. Not only is it really the best sushi I've tasted anywhere, it's imaginative, clean, well-serviced, well-lit, they have art and jazz show in there all the time, it's got a nice backyard, and it's...get this...CHEAP! Not cheap, but just right. Their every-4-months-or-so sake tastings are a real treat, each new sake brought to you by a knowledgeable presenter and presented with a delicious dish. The owner is cool, always has a new cute young Japanese girl with him, has a cute dog, and all of his friends that work in a frame shop come and hang out. Very nice place.
