Best Brunch in Brooklyn?

brunch.jpgThis Monday morning, while thoughts of fluffy omelets, French toast, and mimosas are still on your mind, can you name the best brunch spot in Brooklyn? We were such big fans of Oznot's Dish in Williamsburg, and ever since it closed, brunch just hasn't been the same. We don't expect to find rich, cardamom-scented French toast or chai tea superior to Oznot's, but we need to find another restaurant that'll drag us out of bed on Sunday mornings. Cafe Luluc on Smith Street is our go-to spot at the moment, but it would be nice to find another favorite to keep things interesting.

I'm partial to Chez Oskar on Dekalb and Adelphi. The Spicy Lamb burger is my favorite.

Shane, on Washington between St. John's and Sterling, serves a very yummy brunch. I feel guilty going there, because the folks at Tom's on the corner of Sterling are so nice, but the food at Shane is actually a lot better. Plus, they throw the glass doors open for fresh air, and their coffee is g-r-r-r-reat.

Ici on De Kalb has great brunch! And in Park Slope, I'm partial to Moutarde, which has genuine French croque monsieurs and croque madames, among other goodies.

For a Southern type brunch we go to 2 Steps Down on Dekalbe @ Vanderbilt Ave.

I love the brioche French toast at Union Smith Cafe on Smith and Union and the $12 prix fixe at Patois on Smith and Degraw is pretty awesome as well.

olea in fort greene on dekalb is also great. and dizzy's in park slope. both places where everything on the menu looks amazing, making choices very difficult. and brown betty cafe in clinton hill on grand off of fulton has a mean breakfast pizza.

Good riddance to Oznot's they had started to go downhill on both food and service. My vote for best brunches in Brooklyn:

Taco Chulo in Williamsburg, great service, lots of vegetarian options.

Stone Park Cafe on 5th Avenue and 3rd Street in Park Slope. Great cocktails, service and food. I highly recommend eating at the bar. The pan seared bluefish cakes and the short rib hash and eggs are particularly good.

I walked by Oznot's today. Sign up saying the space is available to rent for $8000 a month.....good luck.

I live in the prison on Atlantic Avenue and we have excellent brunches there.

Oznot's closed because the owner of the building thought he could sell it for mega-bucks, so he threw them out.

He never sold the building.

Far too many building owners on the Northside are convinced that their building will sell for x million because they heard that someone's did.

You cannot possibly in any normal mental state compare Oznot's Dish to Taco Chulo. GIve me a break.

My fav is Frankies at 457 Court St. in Carroll Gardens. My favorite french toast in the world. And awesome bloody marys too, but since Steve left the bar there, you have to now ask for is extra chunky.

Ocean Park Seafood for dim sum in Bensonhurst.

Enid's right on the Greenpoint/Williamsburg border at McCarren Park.

I second the breakfast pizza at Brown Betty on Grand, and I'm also partial to the brunch offerings at Pequena on So. Portland in Ft. Greene.

Brunch at Chestnut on Smith is quite good...

Second, Moutrade

What's the deal with 2 steps down? Never been but have always wondered?

Ha ha, Big Jim. It was mentioned on Brownstoner (I think) that that prison is empty right now (of inmates, anyway).

The breakfast at Kush Cafe (Fulton & Grand) is memorable!

I agree Enid's has great brunch. Also, the Greenpoint Coffee house on Franklin and Green does a nice job, as does the Williamsburg Cafe on N 8th and Wythe.

Royal's on Union between Henry and Clinton-- delicious and unlimited mimosas and bloody marys!

Posted by: relby at September 12, 2006 4:35 PM

I love going to Fada on Driggs/n. 8th. Amazingly crispy yet soft in the middle french toast, cozy french atmosphere and delicious ouefs fada (eggplant and poached eggs). Superb.

coco roco is a great deal with cocktails and coffee included for a tenner and the food is fantastic.

The new kid in the block is this COOL Nuevo-Latino Café and gallery on 1015 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Cafecito features UNBEATABLE innovative brunch ranging from $6.50 to $8.50, which includes many items such as great Colombian Pericos Eggs (scrambled with fresh scallion and tomatoes) or Huevos con Albahaca (basil eggs) served on a lightly-toasted AREPA with cheese, the BBB (Best Brooklyn Brew) and freshly-squeezed Orange Juice.

They also have unbeatable CAFÉ CON LECHE and LATTES that go well together with their unique Parisian and Colombian daily-baked goods. They also feature uniquely-made homemade Colombian Chocolate made with real latin cocoa bars and spices over a stove, and to top it all off they stir the chocolate with a wooden MOLINILLO (wood-utensil) inside an OLLETA (elongated, thin-neck pot). Great place for coffee or chocolate.

Try Beast on Vanderbilt at Bergen (I think). Delicious homefries, strong coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, good service and no long wait for a table. Beat that.

Bushbaby on Fulton St. has the best pancakes I've ever eaten.

Wow, Bena, glad to hear somebody else has had a bad experience with that lowly manager at Ici. I haven't been back since an inexplicable run-in that left me cold and later confused! It's over.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. My wife and I are heading to New York (from Toronto) for our anniversary weekend, staying in Brooklyn. I've made a note of all the places mentioned here. Bring on the French Toast!
