Park Slope's Flatiron Building

building
buildingWhenever we make it over to Grand Army Plaza (as we did on Saturday morning to hit the greenmarket), our eyes our drawn up to this large wedge of a building that, in addition to its prewar terra cotta detailing, is particularly notable for its triangular shape. We're guessing it's a co-op but don't know for sure. Anyone ever been inside or know anything about the building's history?

I have a friend who's parents have owned a gorgeous 3 bedroom in this building since the 70's. It has beautiful rickety elevators with kooky elderly elevator operators. I'm pretty sure it's a co-op.

Our building isn't as large or grand, but it definitely is a mini Flatiron Building here in Prospect Heights at 90 St Marks Avenue--also a coop.

I used to live here - yes it's a coop.

"It has beautiful rickety elevators with kooky elderly elevator operators" is kind of silly comment

Elevators are great, not rickety at all and doormen are average maybe 50 years old...

Building is divided into 2 elevator banks...on one bank elevators mostly service 1 apartment...on the other bank it services at most 2 apartments...therefore very private...

Designed by some very famous architect - sorry forget the name

Apartments are generally huge in the classic 6 to 8 kind of way....woman on top floor (coop president) owns duplex that covers two floors of the entire building - yeah think about it!!!

It's a co-op and is beautiful and spacious inside. Like the poster above stated, there are a lot of classic 6 to 8 apartments. Great views too.

The architect was Rosario Candela.

Besides a wonderful design, elegant lobby, great doormen, the building is a coop, with corresponding maintenance fees...a recent mid-floor 3B apartment facing Union street recently went for $1.1 M

I live in 47 Plaza. It's a wonderful bldg. Lots of very friendly people, nice families. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful (we have a few young employees, too!).

Rosario Candela loved puzzles and codes and surely 47 Plaza is one of his most deliberately coded designs. In our apt there is only one conventionally rectangular room (one of the bathrooms).

The elevator that serves the B&C lines has a wood panel that is pulled out when the penthouse is reached in order to open directly into the penthouse.

By the way, the only other pre-war bldg designed by Candela in Brooklyn is on the same block, the elegant 39 Plaza St West, designed in 1926 for the same developer, Jacob Marc, who wanted to make Plaza Street the "Park Avenue District" of Brooklyn.
